Tyrell Malacia’s future at Manchester United has been called into question by Ruben Amorim, who hinted that the Dutch defender might not have the offensive skills necessary for a wing-back position in his tactical scheme.
Malacia was pulled at halftime four times after returning from an 18-month knee injury hiatus, including a difficult game against FCSB at the National Arena last Thursday, since he has failed to make an impression in recent games, especially in offensive play.
Real Betis is one of the teams willing to give Malacia a chance to restore his form and confidence. Despite his efforts, Amorim has recognised the need for more effective wing-backs, and it now looks like Malacia may be leaving Old Trafford on loan.
However, Amorim hinted that Malacia might fit in with the back three if United starts to control more possession.
In response to a question about Malacia’s future at Old Trafford, the United manager said, “We shall see. I do know that Malacia is having a really difficult time. It is difficult to play a lot of games after a prolonged period of inactivity.
“A full-back is a player like him. He played both indoors and outdoors for the national team, but because he isn’t very offensive, he occasionally finds it difficult to fit in with this strategy.
“If we have more possession and control over the games, he can play as one of the three defenders. It’s a very challenging situation for him. However, we will support him because he is one of our players.
Luke Shaw’s comeback to fitness, who was seen working at Carrington on Wednesday, could further impede Malacia’s chances of making the first squad. Shaw will miss the forthcoming game against Crystal Palace and was left out of the squad for the Europa League travel.
With just three substitute appearances under Amorim in November and December of last year before suffering yet another injury setback, the 29-year-old has had a terrible season owing to injuries and hasn’t started for United since February 18. Shaw will be reintegrated gradually by United, with his primary objective being to work on becoming fit again at Carrington.
After their late-night Europa League victory, which ended just before midnight local time, his colleagues decided to remain in Bucharest and trained there on Friday morning.
“It will take a little bit more time,” indicated Amorim. “I believe he needs to put in more practice and play more games with his teammates, even if they are small-sided. not merely operating by themselves. He remained [in Manchester] to work on a separate project. When we come back to Manchester, he will meet up with the team. And begin there. We’ll begin with a few game minutes when I think it’s appropriate.
