Steven Gerrard’s Priceless Reaction to Neil Warnock’s Liverpool Joke

In 2017, veteran manager Neil Warnock made a joke about the city of Liverpool on live television, leaving Steven Gerrard both confused and furious. Viewers noticed the irritated expression on the Englishman’s face as he bit his tongue and let the remark go unnoticed.

Liverpool has always been Gerrard’s home, and it always will be. The legendary midfielder, who joined the Reds’ youth program at the age of nine, is arguably the team’s finest player ever. He played for the team more than 700 times, scoring 186 goals and taking home a few medals along the way.

He left the Anfield supporters with experiences they would always treasure and notably led the Reds to victory in the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA Cup finals. His incredible journey from a promising teenager to a worldwide sensation was made all the more wonderful by the fact that he was a Scouser, having been born and reared in Merseyside.

Some people think Gerrard, who is currently a manager, will eventually become the coach of his former team. After a disappointing spell at Aston Villa, the 44-year-old’s reputation has fallen despite his outstanding performance with Rangers. After a turbulent 18 months in charge, the retired footballer left Al-Ettifaq in January. He was most recently in charge of the Saudi Pro League team.

Unhappy With Neil Warnock’s Joke, Gerrard
His expression as he looked at the seasoned manager said it all.

Gerrard worked as a pundit for TNT Sports (BT Sport at the time) for a few years after hanging up his boots in 2016. One particularly awkward incident occurred in 2017 when veteran manager Neil Warnock joked about Liverpool while seated between Gerrard and Steve McManaman, two Scousers.

Warnock didn’t exactly make the best decisions. It’s challenging to decipher his thoughts. Presenter Jake Humphrey said that it was as cold in the studio as it was outside the stadium during a January 2017 FA Cup rematch between the Reds and Plymouth.

“I’m from Liverpool, and I’m all right. “The cold doesn’t bother me,” McManaman said. Before his expression fell when Warnock said, “They don’t have windows there, do they?” Gerrard grinned at McManaman’s remark.

Warnock thought his joke was hilarious, but the two former Liverpool players sitting next to him didn’t. In response, Gerrard gave Warnock a death-stare that seemed to go on forever before Humphrey exclaimed, “Going on!” Watch the incredibly embarrassing video below:

Neil, oh. Gerrard made it obvious how he felt about Warnock’s cheesy joke without saying a word.

The Managerial Career of Steven Gerrard
The journey into coaching has been a roller coaster.

Gerrard is still in the early stages of his career as a manager in his own right, whereas Warnock’s time in the dugout has waned recently. In 2018, Rangers, a dominant force in the Scottish Premiership, gave the Liverpudlian his first senior managerial position.

Many thought he was headed towards being the logical heir to Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Anfield after his great spell in Glasgow. Gerrard got a big job in the Premier League with Aston Villa after leading The Gers to an undefeated league victory in the 2020–21 season. But more than anything else, that endeavour damaged his managerial reputation. After 11 months in the east Midlands, he was fired by the Villans in October 2022.

He took over as manager of Al-Ettifaq, a Saudi Pro League team, in July 2023 and held the position until January 2025. If Gerrard hopes to surpass Warnock’s longevity, he still has many decades in the dugout to go.
