Sheffield Wednesday poised to fight Blackburn Rovers for the 15-goal EFL striker.

Sheffield Wednesday is preparing for a new chapter under the leadership of David Storch and his Arise Capital Partners group.

The Owls had a disastrous season last year, being relegated from the Championship with zero points after a total deduction of 18 points.

Now, the South Yorkshire team is looking up and will undoubtedly be one of the largest clubs in the third tier next season.

Signings are expected at Hillsborough this summer as Wednesday prepare for the new season, with club great Barry Bannan returning. However, the current reports indicate that the Owls are looking for a striker.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Wednesday and Championship club Blackburn Rovers are “lining up” a summer move for Huddersfield Town striker Joe Taylor.

Taylor joined the Terriers on a permanent contract from Luton Town in January 2025 for a reputed £3 million, but has only scored nine goals in 42 appearances. A year after joining Yorkshire, he was loaned to rival League One club Wigan Athletic.

The 23-year-old has found his goalscoring form with the Latics, scoring 11 times in 22 games, adding to the four he scored for Town in the first half of the season, and is now attracting interest from other clubs.

Taylor is still under contract at the Accu Stadium until 2029, and while Huddersfield may sell the striker, Wednesday are unlikely to be able to pay the Terriers’ asking price, making a loan more plausible.

Joe Taylor would be a statement signing for Sheffield Wednesday.

Taylor’s signing would not only allow Henrik Pedersen’s side to outbid a Championship club for a signing, but it would also take one of the top attackers in League One away from a team set to compete for promotion this season.

The 23-year-old only made 19 appearances for Luton, and his move from Peterborough United coincided with the Hatters’ promotion to the Premier League.

However, successful loan periods with Colchester United in League Two and Lincoln City in League One during the 2023/24 season attracted clubs to the striker’s ability in front of goal, as he scored 22 goals in all.

Taylor, 23, is likely to return to the Championship, and his performances for Wigan during the second half of last season provide ample proof that he is ready to play in the second tier.

However, a move to Wednesday would provide the opportunity to achieve some continuity after five movements in the previous three and a half years.

He would be playing for one of League One’s biggest clubs and could potentially play a crucial role in a promotion drive to the Championship while representing the Owls.

The temptation of a move to the Championship with Blackburn this summer may be too much for Taylor, but if Wednesday’s interest in the striker is genuine, they should make every effort to sign one of the best strikers in the third tier while also raiding a promotion rival.
