Lyle Taylor, a former EFL striker and commentator, has commended the Sheffield Wednesday management’s remarks upon Barry Bannan’s comeback to the team this summer.

Following the takeover by David Storch’s Arise Capital Partners consortium on Wednesday, a new era has begun after the team was relegated from the Championship the previous season and spent more than six months in administration.

After David Storch took command, Barry Bannan returned to Sheffield Wednesday.

After just six months at The Den, the 36-year-old made an emotional return to South Yorkshire when he rejoined the Owls last month. The Lions had finished third in the Championship the previous season before losing to Hull City in their play-off semifinal.

Sporting director Simon Wilson stated on Wednesday that the deal was “an opportunity to bring in a player whose creativity continues to rank amongst the best in the Championship” and that “his return can be a catalyst for the team we are building, the momentum we want to create and the standards we set” rather than a “sentimental move” following the announcement.

Former Charlton Athletic, Nottingham Forest, and Birmingham City striker Taylor acknowledged on the Football Daily podcast that he was impressed by the remarks made by the Owls board following Bannan’s return on Wednesday.

Taylor said, “He did,” to host Aaron Paul’s assertion that Bannan “hated” his time at Millwall.On social media, he or his wife were quite outspoken about it. That’s okay; it just appears to be the way of the present world and game.

“I thought it intriguing the comment that they made upon his re-signing that this isn’t for clicks, this isn’t for likes, this is us bringing back a player who we know can lead this football club ahead.

“You don’t frequently hear a football team publicly express such sincere feelings about a player; it was rather pleasant to witness.

“I would like to see them do well because that fanbase has been through not just one mire, but a good few over the last seven or eight years, and they truly deserve some sort of success.”

It would have been simple to believe that Bannan’s return was an effort by Wednesday’s new management to win over supporters and revitalise the team given his legendary reputation at Hillsborough.

Wilson accurately noted that despite his limited playing time, Bannan demonstrated during his tenure at Millwall that he is still capable of producing at the Championship level, and he has already showed indications of what he may provide the Owls in the forthcoming season.

In Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Saturday, Bannan made his first appearance of his second stint with the team. He assisted Jamal Lowe’s goal in the 70th minute, and although his playing time may need to be controlled, he could be a bit of a cheat code for Henrik Pedersen’s team in League One this season.
