Norwich City have reached a final decision regarding Philippe Clement’s future following his comments on VAR ahead of the club’s defeat to Millwall.

Adrian Durham has urged Norwich to fire manager Philippe Clement following his ‘pathetic’ rant over VAR before his team’s defeat to Millwall.
The Belgian’s dreadful start to the season continued on Saturday, as the Canaries suffered a demoralising 3-0 defeat at the Den.

Norwich, who were reduced to ten men when Jose Cordoba was sent off in the second half, suffered their second defeat of the season thanks to a Tairyk Arconte double and a late Luke Cundle strike.

This places Clement’s side 23rd in the Championship, with only Southampton below them due to a four-point deduction.

Norwich’s humiliation at the hands of Millwall came just a week after their opening-day loss to Blackburn was clouded by controversy.

The Baggies won 2-1 at Carrow Road, but they were fortunate to have Aune Heggebo redirect the ball into the net with his palm for the opening goal.

Despite Norwich players’ protestations, referee Tim Robinson allowed the goal to stand.

The goal instantly went viral on social media, prompting calls for VAR to be implemented, while Heggebo received a two-game penalty from the EFL for’successful deception of a match official’.

What did Clement say about the VAR?

A day before Norwich’s game against Millwall, Clement gave a heated diatribe advocating for VAR to be introduced to the Championship, mentioning all 71 countries that utilise the system.

In a seven-minute tirade, the former Rangers manager stated: “I believe the league creates its own difficulties by not having VAR.

“I didn’t want to talk about it after the game because you want to focus on the team and what we could do better, and there are obviously things the refs could have done better.

“But I realise it’s real time; it moves quickly, and there are mistakes made by humans.

“That’s why there is VAR.” “So the next morning, you’re still gutted about things, so I asked my analyst to look up which leagues around the world have VAR.”So that is why I have this list.

Clement then paused the press conference to read out all 71 countries that utilise VAR, taking the care to highlight which countries use it in more than one division, unlike England.

He added, “So all of these leagues have VAR. There are countries that have never participated in a World Cup here.

“It’s madness for me that there’s no VAR in the Championship.”

What did Adrian Durham say about Clement?

Less than 24 hours after Clement’s VAR plea, Norwich were soundly thrashed at the Den, and talkSPORT’s Durham was unimpressed with their manager’s attitude.

Durham said on air that the final score was Millwall 3-0 Norwich City.

“Millwall looked really good when I saw them last week at Bristol City, and they followed that up with a big home win over Norwich, who had Jose Cordoba sent off.

After delivering a scathing verdict on Clement, Durham fumed, “No wonder Norwich were battered at Millwall.”

“The manager, Philippe Clement, told his analysts to find out all the countries that have VAR rather than using them to find out about his opponents, Millwall.

“Absolutely pathetic rant about VAR – should have led to an emergency board meeting at Norwich and he should no longer be the manager, but that’s just my opinion.”

Clement took over as Norwich manager in November 2025, nine months after being fired by Rangers, and led the club to ninth place last season.

And, while the Canaries were predicted for a play-off challenge before the season began, their manager’s first priority now will be to gain some points on the board as they attempt to escape the Championship relegation zone.
