John Eustace confirms a setback for Derby County and explains the club’s emergency loan situation.

Vickers’ scan results have returned, and he is now destined for a stint on the sidelines, leaving the Rams with only one fit senior goalkeeper.

John Eustace has revealed that Derby County will be missing Josh Vickers for the next six to eight weeks.

Scans have proved that his groin injury is not as severe as previously thought, but Derby’s head coach thinks he will still miss the rest of the season.

It is a major setback for Vickers, who has performed excellently in the absence of Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, who is still out with a sickness.

It means Richard O’Donnell is the only healthy and senior goalkeeper available, but he has performed admirably this season, including wins over Charlton and Bristol City.

Eustace commented on Vickers’ next game against Portsmouth: “It’s not as bad as we thought, but it will still be six to eight weeks.”We expected it to be a long one, but I believe it will still take up the most of the season.

“It’s a big blow for him, but it gives Rich an opportunity now to step up.”

Derby may consider an emergency loan, although Eustace clarified that this is only possible if O’Donnell sustains an injury. If something happens to Rich, we can bring in another goalkeeper, but as long as we have one senior goalkeeper available, we can’t bring in an emergency loan,” he stated.

“But we have complete confidence in Rich. He’s already stepped up twice this season and delivered excellent performances. With the way he works and applies himself every day, he’ll be prepared for the final games.”

Vickers’ injury will allow one of the academy goalkeepers to make the bench, with Jack Thompson now expected to step up.

The teenage goalkeeper is highly regarded at Derby and spent time on loan at Braintree earlier in the season.

Eustace stated that Thommo will most likely sit on the bench for the time being. The young kid has been doing great in training. He’s done well in the 23s. “He performed well while on loan.”There may be an opportunity for him as well.

“I’ve already mentioned throughout the season how expertly Paul Clements manages the goalkeeping department. All goalkeepers, including the younger youngsters, have shown positive development. We’re completely confident in whoever steps up.”
