Wolverhampton Wanderers’ pre-season plans had already sparked interest, but the mood at Molineux is one of tremendous uncertainty and conflicting emotions following Rob Edwards’ sacking.
The Black Country club is preparing for its first Championship season in eight years, after being relegated as the Premier League’s poorest club with only three wins from 38 games.
The club has been on a downward and somewhat unsettled curve in recent times under the ownership of Fosun Group, who were previously celebrated for guiding the club back to the top-flight in the title-winning campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo, before reaching the FA Cup semi-final and UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in the two immediate seasons.
Edwards, whose history with the Old Gold and Black is well documented, returned to WV1 in his most recent managerial job in November after Wolves parted ways with current Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira following a dismal start to the season.
The 43-year-old’s decision was controversial at the time, given that he had only been appointed as Middlesbrough’s head coach a year earlier, and despite Wolves’ precarious position throughout 2025/26, Edwards continued to divide opinion.
However, given recent activity, there was hope that he would still be tasked with mounting a first-time promotion bid, until it was confirmed on Thursday that he had been fired, after allegedly only learning of such developments through social media, with Gil Vicente boss Cesar Peixoto poised to take the reins.
Unsurprisingly, considering Edwards’ managing career thus far, there have been various reactions, including from those who offered him a significant breakthrough.
Forest Green Rovers take aim at Rob Edwards after shock. Wolves’ dismissal

Indeed, following stints as a coach, including time with Wolves, Edwards’ first professional managing position came with Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2021.
The Gloucestershire club was, and continues to be, tremendously ambitious under Dale Vince’s leadership, and after two instances of play-off semi-final sorrow in League Two, they went to the Telford native as a highly regarded coach to guide their promotion to League One for the first time.
Edwards was able to meet such expectations, with the Green Devils winning the fourth-tier title on goal difference over Exeter City, and their head coach garnering excellent reviews as a result.
However, days later, he would make the rather large step up to join Watford, who had recently been relegated from the Premier League, with those at The New Lawn furious with how negotiations had been handled by Edwards and the Hornets, claiming a lack of loyalty had been demonstrated by their title-winning manager.
Despite the fact that four years have passed and Edwards has since managed in the Premier League twice, the first coming after a remarkable play-off victory at Luton Town in May 2023, those associated with the current National League side did not hesitate to fire a dig at him.

Simply put, they chose the ubiquitous meme of former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson screaming “Oh no!” Anyway,” has sparked controversy.
Wolves face another difficult era following Rob Edwards’ departure.

Edwards’ departure means that Peixoto, the expected man in the hot seat, will become Wanderers’ sixth manager since Nuno’s traumatic departure five years ago, and understandably, this has caused discord within the group.
Wolves announced earlier this week the high-profile signings of Kieran Trippier and former Molineux ace and cult icon Raul Jimenez on free transfers, with Edwards actively engaged in both transactions.
According to reports, the former England international is among several players who are incensed by the decision, which might make for an interesting start to the season.
Naturally, the Midlands side has been projected for promotion alongside West Ham United, but such predictions may soon be debunked.
