A Derby County takeover update emerges amid links to Turki Alalshikh.

Derby County achieved their highest Championship finish since their 2018/19 play-off final appearance, but Turki Alalshikh’s investment has the potential to reshape things at Pride Park.

John Eustace and his teammates finished eighth in only their second Championship season after being promoted from League One. However, the second tier will have a number of larger fish in the pond in 2026/27, and investing may be the best way to compete with those teams.

David Clowes, who saved Derby County from bankruptcy when they were in administration in 2022, has also stated that he is open to new investors coming in to assist bring the club back to Premier League level, according to the BBC.

Since then, Turki Alalshikh has been dropping hints about Derby on social media. He is one of the most important people in Saudi Arabian sport and entertainment, and he may work alongside Clowes to propel the club ahead, potentially competing with Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United.

Turki Alalshikh is close to signing with Derby County.

In actuality, the Rams are one of the Championship’s most appealing clubs for investors. Derby are, in many ways, prepared for a takeover or at least an equity investor injecting further funds into the club.

According to the Derby Telegraph, Clowes has had financial backing since last December, when he indicated his willingness to sell. The Saudi multimillionaire’s suggestion comes next. In fact, we looked into Alalshikh’s net wealth as Derby takeover speculation grew.

Alalshikh has thrown several Derby takeover signals in recent weeks and months, and it appears that talks between Derby and Alalshikh are progressing and possibly coming to a close.

The end of talks appears to be in sight, with the Derby Telegraph claiming that Derby has had “multiple interested parties” discuss potential investment as Alalshikh attempts to finalise a deal with the Championship club.

The club stated that it has spoken with potential investors, and the Independent Football Regulator is aware of the Saudi entrepreneur’s interest. Chief executive Stephen Pearce has also remarked on the new developments through the Supporters’ Board notes.

They stated: “Stephen informed us that there are multiple interested parties in conversation with the club but that no public announcements would be made until the Independent Football Regulator (IFR), the EFL, and legal processes permit.”Over the years, the club has maintained a policy of not commenting on media conjecture to confirm or deny any links, as this would require them to respond to every report. The club did not provide additional confidential information on the investment status or individual parties involved.Once an in-principle agreement is reached, a prospective investor will be directed to the IFR/EFL. The IFR can access information from many government departments and terminate negotiations with unsuitable parties. The existing owners will make the final decision on when, who, and how much of the club is sold, therefore we recognised that the issues we posed were not simply club-related.”

Turki Alalshikh is a defining individual for the independent football regulator.

Alalshikh’s investment might change this Derby side, who finished eighth last season under Eustace, but there is no certainty that he will pass the necessary tests to acquire some or all of the club from Clowes.

The IFR will have the last word on whether a purchase can forward, with the authority to research prospective owners, review where their cash comes from, and determine whether they have the financial strength to run the club in the coming years.

In fact, Alalshikh’s IFR examination could serve as a “defining test” for the regulator. This is because the IFR confirmed in September 2025.

That test determines if new club owners or other individuals with considerable control are qualified to govern a club. It is a potentially pivotal moment for them, and they will be desperate to do it right. Derby may not be in the clear yet.
