Derby County outperformed expectations in John Eustace’s first full season as manager last year. While a play-off push had been a long-term aim at Pride Park, few anticipated it to happen so early in his tenure.
The Rams’ eighth-place position was their highest since the 2018/19 season, demonstrating the club’s evident ability to return to the Premier League after a nearly two-decade absence.
However, these aspirations will not be completely realised until significant investment is made in Pride Park. Beloved owner David Clowes saved Derby from liquidation when he bought the club in 2022, but he hasn’t changed his attitude on a sale, as he seeks to help the club achieve a new, higher level.
Aside from a spectacular deal for Patrick Agyemang, who might cost up to £7.3 million, Derby did not break the bank last summer, and many of the successful recruits at Pride Park this season came in for small undisclosed sums or were on loan.
Bobby Clark, one of the loanees, succeeded under John Eustace, scoring seven goals in 42 league games and garnering a nomination for Championship Young Player of the Season.
The former RB Salzburg star was thought to be one of those loan players who you fall in love with for a season before moving on to larger things, but Derby are on the verge of signing him permanently for £6 million, which could imply some change behind the scenes at Pride Park as well.
Turki Alalshikh’s participation with Derby County could be close following Bobby Clark’s transfer deal.

It’s no secret that Saudi government official Turki Alalshikh, the guy behind the hugely successful Riyadh Season, has shown an interest in investing in a Championship club, and Derby appear to be the team he’s linked with this summer.
The Telegraph claimed around the end of May that the billionaire was in talks with the Rams about a prospective investment arrangement, and that the negotiations were with the new Independent Football Regulator.
Since then, discussions concerning Turki Alalshikh’s level of engagement at Pride Park have been purely speculative, with indications from the man himself and updates from the club regarding investment options surfacing implying that it is all but certain.
However, Clark’s alleged £6 million deal could be the most significant signal of all.
For starters, a £6 million sum is huge for a Championship club that does not get Premier League parachute payments, including those vying for promotion.
Even if the Rams spent a similar amount on Agyemang, the fact that this deal came so early in the window suggests that there will be more acquisitions to come, and they may have a similar price tag attached to them.
However, the most significant signal of the additional investment is Clark’s belief that Derby is a suitable fit for his long-term goals. Last season shown that the 21-year-old could be a top-flight player quickly somewhere, and maybe a Premier League-standard midfielder in a few years.
His decision to potentially return to Pride Park indicates that Derby has Premier League ambitions in the coming years, which will undoubtedly delight Rams fans.
Derby County have thrown down a foundation for potential deals this summer with the Bobby Clark addition.

Many Derby fans were resigned to the fact that Clark will most certainly move on this summer, either back to Salzburg or to another club.
The fact that they’re the frontrunners for his services is a great plus, but the fact that they’re willing to part ways with such a large price so early in the process is really intriguing, especially given the other work they have to do.
John Eustace will most likely require four or five new signings this summer to replace some of the other loanees who are returning to their parent clubs while also improving the current crop of players.
So, parting with £6 million of the budget would not be the best move, unless there is still a sufficient amount available to spend elsewhere.
It’s enough to have Derby fans excitedly wondering if Turki Alalshikh’s involvement has already begun, even if nothing has been officially declared, and if this signals additional high-profile arrivals at Pride Park before the season begins.
If all of this comes to fruition, there may be little stopping John Eustace’s team from going one better in 2026/27.
