Sheffield United have had a tough final few months of the Championship season, with preparations underway for the 2026/27 campaign.
The Blades have already stated that Tom Davies will leave the club when his contract expires, with the former Everton player among others who will leave on a free.
A lot of the present squad is made up of loan players, and while Sheffield United are hoping to re-sign Kalvin Phillips for next season, the expectation is that the majority will return to their parent clubs.

As a result, a big rebuild will occur, and Gus Hamer is yet another player whose future is unknown.
Chris Wilder admits Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer
Since joining the Yorkshire side from Coventry in the summer of 2023, the attacking midfielder has been a star player.
He was especially good last season, when he was voted the division’s Player of the Year after Sheffield United lost the play-off final to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.
Despite his apparent talent, there has been speculation in recent months that Hamer could depart Bramall Lane when his contract expires in 2027, with Trabzonspor reportedly interested.
As a result, the Blades fear losing their best player on a free transfer, and the forthcoming window offers the last chance to secure a reasonable amount for Hamer – assuming a new deal is not agreed upon with the Dutchman.
And, according to the Sheffield Star, Wilder acknowledged how brilliant Hamer has been, but stated that it is up to the player to demonstrate his want to stay, with talks underway over a new deal, as he says they would not sell on the cheap no matter what happens.
“We’re chatting with them. Gus is on the team, and he’s probably been our best player since I returned last year. He was wonderful. He has had a difficult season, as have many of the players this year, but he is an asset.
He’s one of the top players in the Championship. However, he must also decide on his own future. But, as always, the question is, ‘Do you want to be a part of our new journey?’ If they don’t, we’ll do our utmost to facilitate and make things happen. Without becoming duped by someone simply giving or low-balling us on a price that we don’t believe is appropriate for us.”
Sheffield United must do everything it can to keep Gus Hamer.
Obviously, this goes without saying, but Sheffield United must do everything they can to keep Hamer, who is an excellent player at this level.
We know the Blades are preparing for another year outside the Premier League, which will be financially hard, so it may be impossible to keep Hamer on a new and improved contract.

However, from a football standpoint, the team must do everything they can to persuade him to sign a contract. He remains a player who can make a difference in the Championship, and he promises goals and assists throughout the season.
Wilder is fully aware of his abilities, and he will undoubtedly emphasize the importance of attempting to keep Hamer and developing a squad around his finest player.
However, if he does not sign a contract, the club will be in a difficult position, with most agreeing that moving him is the wisest choice. It’s evident that they need to rebuild, and Hamer, regardless of his contract position, would be one of the team’s most significant assets.
As a result, his departure may be required to bankroll Wilder’s acquisition of new players. In any case, the player and the club face a major decision as Sheffield United prepare for a busy summer transfer season.
