An EFL club have confirmed that a letter of intent has been signed with potential investors amid relegation concerns.

Northampton Town are in talks with a ‘well-funded’ investment company to settle the club’s debts.

The announcement comes just 48 hours after the club’s relegation to League Two was confirmed following a run of seven consecutive defeats, culminating in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at Luton.

There have been no specifics released about the group or the amount of investment that will be made in the team.

There is also no indication of whether there will be a complete takeover of the club or the estimated timeline for change.

Club statement.

Cobblers Chairman Kelvin Thomas stated, “We have been extremely upfront for a long time about the need for new investment and have been working hard behind the scenes to hopefully make that happen.

“We are excited because we believe we have identified the perfect collection of people to support the club in the future, who are very football-focused and excited about the possibilities.

“If this procedure is finally successful, we anticipate that the club will be debt-free, which is something we have always longed for.

“The group’s principals have toured Northampton, including the club, training ground, and stadium, and are very enthused about the potential ahead.

“We fully realize and appreciate that the results in 2026 were incredibly disappointing, but this deal was never contingent on divisional status and is a critical step for the club, particularly to provide the club the best chance of being more competitive in football’s present financial situation.

“Of course, this will be an unusual period, but the club’s activity continues, including preparing for the following season and managerial appointment conversations.

“As always we will keep fans updated as much as possible, but there will be no further comment until such time as there is more formal progress.”

Northampton Town has revealed a £2.995 million pre-tax loss for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, despite a club-record turnover of £7.541 million.

Northampton have been without a manager since Kevin Nolan was sacked last month.

Colin Calderwood has been in temporary charge of the team since Nolan’s departure, but has done little to improve their fortunes, with only one win in their last 22 matches.

Focus on an immediate return.

After their relegation was announced, Thomas promised fans that he would focus on returning the team to the third tier as soon as possible.”Lessons will be learned,” he explained. “We have proved we can get out of League Two,

and now the goal is to get back into League One as soon as possible and all of our focus moves towards that.”We are upset with how this season is ending. The results of the past three or four months have just not been satisfactory.

“To be where we were at Christmas and then to drop off so significantly really hurts.”We really understand your grief, and everyone in the club feels the same way.”
