Although the summer transfer window has been legally open for just under a month, several Championship teams have found the first few weeks to be slow.

That includes Birmingham City, who will want to continue developing Chris Davies’ team by the time the competitive season begins with road trips to Swansea City and Sheffield United, the former of which is in the EFL Cup first round.

During Birmingham’s three-year ownership by American investment group Knighthead Capital Management, they have undoubtedly shown their muscles in the transfer market on multiple occasions, albeit with mixed outcomes in terms of success.

Davies is currently overseeing his third pre-season at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park and his fifth transfer window since being appointed by Tom Wagner two summers ago, with the 41-year-old and his squad currently based in Lagos, Portugal for a week-long training camp before returning to England to finish their preparations with a host of domestic friendlies and a high-profile fixture against La Liga champions FC Barcelona.

However, in an in-depth interview with the club’s official channels, detailing his ambitions for 2026/27, Davies was able to provide a new update on how the transfer market is currently looking from the club’s perspective.

There was a lot of speculation about how the club’s transfer plans would unfold after it was revealed last month that director of football Craig Gardner had stepped down after assisting Davies in signing new players for B9.

Indeed, during the time the duo worked together, the Blues broke their transfer record by spending more than £15 million to sign Jay Stansfield from Fulham in August 2024, while also undergoing two major squad reshuffles last summer and earlier this year.

So far this summer, Jhon Solis’ initial loan move from Girona FC has been made permanent via a £6 million option-to-buy clause after impressing in just 18 prior appearances, while Dael Fry’s lengthy spell with Middlesbrough has ended, allowing Birmingham to sign the 28-year-old on a free transfer.

Davies expressed discontent with the current transfer window, stating, “You always want to get players in as soon as possible.”The World Cup may cause temporary delays due to the knock-on impact.He continued, “We want to improve our squad.”We must strive to leave each transfer window stronger than when we entered, and there is still work to be done to achieve this goal.A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, and I’m pretty sure what we need to do,” Davies stated.

“We absolutely want to improve our team’s speed, strength, size, and power. “I believe this will enhance our team’s effectiveness.”The Blues boss emphasised the importance of championship experience.However, if the correct player, such as Solis or Carlos Vicente, has performed well since their arrival, this may not be necessary.But we have to make sure they’re the appropriate guy.”

Birmingham City has had a solid start to the transfer window in terms of incomings.

Later in his meetings, Davies underlined his conviction that a huge percentage of the squad could have benefited from a season’s worth of Championship games last season, following previous criticism of the hierarchy for a lack of acquisitions with division experience and knowledge.

However, it is difficult to deny that the two signings made thus far have put the club on the correct track in terms of incomings, even if the lack of market activity has been frustrating.

However, the window is still open for just under two months, and Davies will be aware that he and supporters may have to be patient in order to sign players that meet the criteria he mentioned.
