Chris Wilder has intimated that Sheffield United would have limited resources to spend during the January transfer window.
Following a difficult summer transfer market, the Blades have had a disappointing start to the new Championship season.
When compared to competing clubs with promotion ambitions, the Yorkshire outfit lacked the financial resources to compete for players.
Sheffield United are playing their first season in the second division without parachute payments after being relegated from the Premier League in 2024.
Wilder led the club to a play-off final in 2025, but a 13th-place performance in the following season saw them drop down the competitive rankings.
In the summer, the Championship club focused on free agent and loan additions to showcase their limited finances.
Chris Wilder issues Sheffield United a January transfer warning.

Wilder has stated that Sheffield United is still suffering from mistakes committed in previous transfer windows, implying that CEO Steve Bettis has reminded him that it is time for a reset.
The 59-year-old has stated that the club will prioritise developing young players while also bringing in seasoned Championship players for experience.
“One of the questions you asked Steve [Bettis] on Tuesday night was, ‘Why aren’t we looking abroad?'” “We’ve done that,” Wilder told the BBC on X.
“We accomplished that at a high cost, and we’re resetting as a result.
“Our model, in my opinion, is our academy, which is invaluable given the players we’ve produced.
“We have seasoned Championship players who I trust, and as far as recruitment goes, I don’t bully anyone.
“I don’t go to the owners and say, ‘You must sign this player.'”
“We employ a respected and experienced data provider that has had recent success to validate the players we recommend.
“We look abroad; I’ve looked abroad before.
“We’ve previously signed Panos [Restos], a Greek international, and Sander Berge.
“I’m not bothered about where they come.”
Sheffield United signed six players before the summer transfer window closed, including Kalvin Phillips, who returned on loan from Manchester City.
Matt Doherty and Hamza Choudhury signed on a permanent basis, while Liam Kitching, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Romelle Donavon came on loan.

Sheffield United’s bad performances
Sheffield United entered the September international break 18th in the Championship table, having earned nine points out of a possible 24.
The Blades won just two of their first eight games, drawing two and losing three, leaving them eight points behind leaders Swansea City.
Prior to the break, the Yorkshire club had lost three consecutive games in all competitions, including league games against Wolves and Stoke City, as well as an EFL Cup match against Fleetwood Town.
Wilder’s side’s next match is at home against Lincoln City on Saturday at 3 p.m.
