The top 13 youngest players in the EFL Championship for the 2026/27 season have been revealed, highlighting some of the league’s most promising young talents ahead of the new campaign.

Every season, the EFL Championship features several young, dynamic players with Premier League potential.

And based on the second tier’s opening day, that perception does not appear to be changing anytime soon.

From teenage sensations who have been trusted from the start to those on the margins trying to inject some energy into games off the bench, here are the 13 youngest players to have appeared in the Championship throughout the first weekend.

11Mamadou Doumbia and Lewis Orford – 18th February 2006

We begin the list with two people born on the same day, Watford’s Mamadou Doumbia and West Ham United’s Lewis Orford, both of whom appeared on opening day, on February 18th, 2006.

Doumbia, a Mali international, led the line for Alessio Dionisi’s inexperienced offensive quartet in the Hornets’ victory over Southampton. The academy graduate has already made almost 50 Championship appearances for the club, scoring four times last season.

Meanwhile, Lewis Orford appears to be in line for a significant increase in playing time following the Hammers’ relegation.

The midfielder has only made five professional appearances for the club he has been with since he was five years old, two of which came this season, when he played 90 minutes against Portsmouth and Burnley.

Hopefully, any signings made by West Ham between now and September 1 will not hinder the 20-year-old’s playing time this season.

10Oscar Schwartau – 17th May 2006

Oscar Schwartau, a Danish Under-21 international, has made well over 100 senior games with Brondby and, most recently, Norwich City.

The offensive midfielder is in his third season at Carrow Road and is among the division’s youngest players. Clearly, his future is bright.

Philippe Clement only used him as a substitute against West Brom, but he started in the EFL Cup against MK Dons. Given Norwich’s striking depth this season, the 20-year-old will most likely be in and out of the starting eleven.

9Ryan One – 26th June 2006

Many Sheffield United and neutral fans are excited to see what Ryan One can accomplish at Bramall Lane this season, following a loan spell at Lincoln City in the second part of last year, during which he scored five goals in seven starts.

The young Scotsman threatened to break into Chris Wilder’s side during their 92-point season in 2024/25, making 12 league appearances and scoring once, and he has come off the bench in both games this year.

One was subject to a bid from Rangers this summer, but the Blades declined, stating that they want to be the ones to gain from the striker’s potential.

8Rio Cardines and Pedro Lima – 1st July 2006

Rio Cardines and Pedro Lima are another example of players born on the same day, with both ranking tenth on the list.

Cardines, a left-back, is on his first loan spell away from Crystal Palace, having joined Bristol City for the season.

The 20-year-old Stevenage native has 11 senior caps for Trinidad & Tobago, made his Premier League debut against Arsenal on the penultimate day of last season, and played in the first game of Palace’s UEFA Conference League campaign against Dynamo Kiev.

He made his Robins debut off the bench in their defeat to Millwall, but it won’t be long until he’s vying for the starting left-back position at Ashton Gate.

Meanwhile, Lima was technically younger when he made his first appearance of the season, coming off the bench for Wolves on Friday night, before Bristol City’s opener the next day.

The Brazilian Under-20 international had nine Premier League games last season, three of which were starts, and he is expected to play more minutes this year.

7Tom Atcheson – 22nd September 2006

Tom Atcheson, a Blackburn Rovers academy graduate, is expected to have a breakout season this season at the heart of the Ewood Park defence.

Last season, the 19-year-old broke into the senior team, starting the final eight league games under Michael O’Neill, who subsequently awarded him his Northern Ireland debut in March.

This summer, he was given the number six shirt, demonstrating Tony Mowbray’s faith in his ability, and he has played every minute under him.

At the age of 19, the first-team experience he’s getting at Championship level will be invaluable, and Rovers fans are understandably excited to see him improve as the season progresses.

6Romelle Donovan – 30th November 2006

Sheffield United will need a creative spark this season after Gustavo Hamer’s departure, and while it is unknown who his direct replacement will be, 19-year-old Brentford loanee Romelle Donovan will be expected to bear some of the job.

Donovan has shown glimpses of quality at Birmingham City, Burton Albion on loan, and Brentford, and all he needs is regular game time to improve.

The Premier League club will hope that Sheffield United can provide that game time, and with starts in the first two competitive games, things look positive for the rest of the season.

5Ronan Kpakio – 25th May 2007

Ronan Kpakio, a Cardiff City academy graduate, aged 19 in May and already has four senior caps for the Welsh national team.

The right-back must fight with Perry NG, one of the Bluebirds’ veteran heads, but he still made 18 League One starts last season, and Brian Barry-Murphy ensures that he comes off the bench more often than not.

The Cardiff manager’s track record of developing young talent will only help Kpakio, and with previous experience with the national squad, the only way is up for the 19-year-old.

4Amin Nabizada – 21st June 2007

Neutral supporters who watched Watford’s first game of the season against Southampton were probably wondering who Alessio Dionisi had on the right wing, but by the conclusion, everyone knew Amin Nabizada’s name.

If his amazing solo goal against the Saints is any indication, Nabizada has the potential to become a major player in the Championship this season.

3Mateus Mane – 16th September 2007

Speaking of Championship major characters, many neutrals who saw Mateus Mane emerge as Wolves’ only real bright spot last season are excited to see what the gifted Portuguese wideman can do in the second division.

The 18-year-old started all but one Premier League game in 2026, finishing with three goals and two assists, and while he was frustrated against Blackburn on the first day, you’d expect him to have more success on the wing this season.

With little over a week left in the transfer window, it appears that he will stay, and if he does, he will pose a challenge to Championship fullbacks this season.

2Luke Brooke-Smith – 6th June 2008

Portsmouth has made an investment in young people this summer. They are also ranked first on this list, but Luke Brooke-Smith, who arrived from Wellington Phoenix this summer, is their number two prospect to develop for the future.

Despite only turning 18 in June, Brooke-Smith has already made 33 appearances in the Australian top division over the last two seasons, scoring one goal and assisting twice for Wellington.

His Championship debut at Fratton Park was not ideal, as he was substituted at half-time with his team behind 3-1 to QPR, but he has all the makings of an entertaining player this season.

1Ryan Kavuma-McQueen – 1st January 2009

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, a 17-year-old Chelsea loanee born on New Year’s Day 2009, replaced Brooke-Smith on the bench against QPR. If it does not make you feel old, nothing will!

Kavuma-McQueen has been with Chelsea since the age of seven, going through the club’s development divisions until making his senior debut against Port Vale in the FA Cup last season.

He looked very good on his Pompey debut against QPR, creating several chances and taking a couple shots himself. He appears bold and may be a very exciting young winger in the Championship this season.
