AZ Alkmaar, of the Netherlands, has rejected West Ham’s opening bid for Troy Parrott.

According to Voetbal International, the Eredivisie side has turned down the Hammers’ opening bid of between €18 and 20 (£15.4 and 17.1) million.

The Ireland international has been touted as the Championship club’s main target this summer as they strive to return to the Premier League.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s team finished 18th in the previous season and has only signed Joel Veltman and Keiber Lamadrid to their first-team roster.

West Ham have until September 1 to finish any outstanding business before the market closes, giving them three weeks to finalise a deal for Parrott.

However, the new league season will begin this weekend, with the London club playing Burnley on Sunday.

According to reports, West Ham’s deal to capture Parrott might move fast provided they can meet AZ Alkmaar’s transfer demands.
