Quiz show contestants baffled after finding out five of Man Utd’s 1999 Champions League final squad were pointless answers

Two contestants were left speechless after receiving an answer that was related to football during an episode of Pointless that aired on April 1.

Tuesday evening (April 1) was the time that the episode was broadcast on the BBC. On the off chance that you are not familiar with the show, the objective of the game is to earn as few points as possible by providing answers that are difficult to understand to a variety of questions that cover topics such as music, sports, and general knowledge.

For every contestant whose answer is not selected by any of the one hundred participants who remain anonymous, that contestant will receive zero points.

At the conclusion of the competition, the team that finished with the fewest points earned the jackpot.

Now, what exactly was the football question that caused such a commotion?

It was about men’s football teams that won the treble, with Manchester United’s squad from the 1999 Champions League final and Manchester City’s squad from the 2023 Champions League final both appearing on the screen.

During the discussion of possible responses, one of the contestants quickly suggested David May, while another put forward Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Other players, including Ryan Giggs, were also mentioned.

The focus then shifted to the portion of the question that was about Manchester City, and one of the contestants provided the following response: “Perhaps Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer are sitting on the bench.”

Afterwards, the two individuals verified their three responses.

Starting with the Manchester United team from 1999, David May, and then moving on to the Manchester City team from 2023, hopefully Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis.”

Should one of the responses have been found to be “pointless,” the contestants would have been awarded a sum of £6,750.

The two individuals were taken aback by the fact that Palmer was a “pointless” answer; consequently, they were awarded the monetary prize.

There was also the possibility of obtaining a bonus of £500, which would have been awarded in the event that the other two answers were found to be “pointless.” And to our good fortune, Lewis was a pointless response.

Next, everything was riding on May being a pointless answer with the contestants admitting that they felt this was their best shot at a pointless answer.

Unfortunately, the pair could not win the £500 bonus as two of the 100 participants named May – although the couple still walked away with a jackpot of £6,750.

The five pointless answers for the Man Utd part of the question were Jesper Blomqvist, Jonathan Greening, Ronny Johnsen, Wes Brown and Raimundus van der Gouw.

While the seven pointless answers for the Man City part of the question were Palmer, Lewis, Stefan Ortega, Julian Alvarez, Scott Carson, Sergio Gomez and Maximo Peronne.
