West Ham transfer truth revealed – at least three Hammers players that will leave

West Ham United are expected to cut their squad further during the forthcoming January transfer window, with at least three players poised to leave.

In recent weeks, the Hammers have been erratic at best, with victories against Lincoln City and Swansea offset by defeats over Millwall and QPR, as well as a loss to Southampton.

There may be another drive to bring new players into the fold in the mid-season transfer window, but it may necessitate the sale of some lesser-used players – even after spending large money on Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville in the summer.

West Ham trio who may leave London Stadium have been named.

Claret & Hugh, a West Ham outlet, reports that three senior West Ham players will be transferred on in the coming months, or that the club will try to find new homes for them.

Edson Alvarez, a Mexico international midfielder, is said to be one of them, along with little-known winger Maxwel Cornet and Soungoutou Magassa, in what could be a bit of a salary relief for the Hammers.

Another player who might leave is goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who trails Mads Hermansen as Nuno’s first-choice stopper, but there’s less of a rush to get the Frenchman off the books, given his contract expires next summer.

How much may West Ham save on salary by moving the undesired trio?

Nuno’s promotion of junior players like Lewis Orford and Mohamadou Kante to the first squad this season has left Alvarez and Magassa with no chance to press their claim in midfield, especially with the additions of Divine Mukasa and Arne Engels.

And, while Cornet may be an asset in the Championship if he’s fit, he has a terrible injury record and hasn’t appeared in a league or cup game for West Ham since April 2024.

West Ham may save a significant amount of money on salary by releasing the trio. According to Capology, Alvarez earns £50,000 per week, Magassa earns £17,500 per week, and Cornet earns £32,500 per week at the London Stadium, resulting in a £100,000-per-week savings if all three were able to leave with their new teams paying their entire salary.

The trio was paid almost £70 million to move to east London, so the club will have to absorb a financial hit to get them off the books.

More West Ham players face the axe if they do not improve their performances.

The defeat to Southampton this weekend demonstrated that West Ham are not the automatic promotion team as many believed, with Tonda Eckert out-thinking Nuno when it mattered most.

And, if things continue to be erratic, the barely-seen trio stated above are not the only players who may be searching for a new club by January 2027.

Taty Castellanos, for example, has only scored once in the Championship, which is significantly less than you’d expect for a player of his worth, and their defensive unit has struggled on occasion.

With their current roster, it’s practically unthinkable that West Ham could spend a second year in the Championship; action may be required in a few months to put them in a better position.
