West Ham and Leicester City face a potential £5m transfer setback, with the latest update raising questions over their plans.

Dom Ballard became one of the EFL’s hottest properties during the summer transfer window as a result of his goal-scoring exploits for Leyton Orient in a challenging League One season.

The third tier has definitely helped develop some of the country’s best talents in recent times, and even the East London club have, in general, contributed to that fact, with England’s all-time leading scorer, Harry Kane, spending a spell at Brisbane Road.

Whilst it would have, predictably, been painful for Richie Wellens to lose a player of the forward’s calibre in the summer window to Bristol City, the Robins and their supporters will undoubtedly be relishing the early-season form demonstrated by Ballard in a new-look team at Ashton Gate.

However, those associated with the BS3 club will also be enjoying the fact that one of their divisional rivals, as well as one of League One’s most under-pressure clubs, will be wincing at such feats, even though they also attempted to add further firepower in the recently closed summer transfer window.

Leyton Orient evidently had great hopes for Dom Ballard following the Southampton agreement.

Ballard, of course, has had a successful recent career, thanks in large part to his record of 23 goals and five assists in just 44 games in all competitions for Orient, who could have been relegated to League Two without his services.

After joining the 2025 League One play-off finalists, Wellens had done his study on the homegrown center-forward, who previously had loan spells at Blackpool, Cambridge United, and Reading. We’ve had our eyes on him for a few of seasons now,” stated the O’s manager. Back in April, it was claimed that the club used Jay Stansfield’s record-breaking Birmingham City transfer as a price point for potential summer suitors.

Bristol City’s Dom Ballard acquisition will make West Ham and Leicester City move cringe.

It was revealed this summer that Ballard’s move to East London was in the six-figure region, whilst including a plethora of bonuses and a sell-on clause which came the way of Southampton.

Naturally, the 2025/26 League One Player of the Season attracted plenty of interest from clubs far superior to Orient, including West Ham United and Leicester City who had just been relegated into the Championship and League One.

However, it was Bristol City who pushed hardest for his signing in a reputed £5m deal, and they haven’t looked back in the early stages of this season, with the new arrival bagging three goals in his first eight Championship games for the club.

One of those was a stunning strike in the 2-2 draw at Birmingham on August 22nd, which would have made those at the London Stadium and King Power Stadium, in particular, cringe at their transfer mishaps, even if the Hammers have netted 22 goals since their return to the second tier and currently sit second in the table.

Russell Martin will have added Dom Ballard angst following Southampton spell

Martin will be kicking himself for not getting Ballard especially since Bristol City also stopped Leicester’s bid for Lorent Tolaj who was another standout performer in League One last season with Plymouth Argyle.

The 40-year-old, who is under intense pressure at present with Leicester sitting 14th in the table, will also be frustrated that he has not had the opportunity to use Ballard’s services on a regular basis after helping aid his initial development at Southampton, where he was in charge between June 2023 and December 2024.

“He’s way beyond under-21s football, he scores every time he plays for them. Martin said of the striker in the summer of 2024: “He needs to go out and play football every week for his development and for us.

Dom Ballard will hope his latest boast rings true for Bristol City fans

There will be plenty of players who would jump at the chance to become a cult hero in E20 or LE2 given what’s happened recently to West Ham and Leicester, but it’s clear that Ballard has thought logically about where would be the best fit for his current ability, potential and ambitions of playing at a higher level.

“A big part of me coming here was the gaffer I think. “Obviously Bristol City is a massive Club, the stadium, the facilities, it’s all amazing,” he conceded.

But talking to the boss, and obviously playing against his squad last year, it was incredibly exciting to see the chances I could have in a team like that.

I wish to improve. It’s not only about the here and now for me. It’s three years from now, four years from now: Where do I want to be? I thought this Club was a place I could realise such things.”

The Robins have been absent from the top-flight since the 1980s, but under Michael Skubala there is every chance his youthful side, led by Ballard, could end such an exile in the coming years, justifying his decision and increasing the chances of the club landing a handsome profit in the meantime.
