UEFA shares the reason why Anthony Elanga was named the man of the match in Newcastle United’s 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Champions League

Anthony Elanga was selected the UEFA Man of the Match in Newcastle’s unprecedented Champions League victory.

Anthony Elanga was named UEFA Man of the Match when Newcastle United defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 in the Champions League.

The Swedish winger contributed two goals to the Magpies’ best triumph in the competition. Elanga’s cross assisted Nick Woltemade’s opening goal before winning the penalty, which Anthony Gordon converted to double the lead. Gordon later added a second penalty shot, and substitute Harvey Barnes completed the victory with a late strike after replacing Elanga in the 73rd minute.

Although Elanga has yet to score an official goal or assist since his £55 million summer transfer from Nottingham Forest, his impact in Brussels earned him UEFA’s top individual prize.

Reflecting on the recognition, Elanga stated:

“I’m happy with the award, it’s always special to get recognition but this was thanks to the team, really.”

Despite Gordon’s brace and Woltemade’s ongoing good form (his third goal in four starts), UEFA praised Elanga for his overall contribution. Sandro Tonali and Malick Thiaw were also lauded, but Elanga’s contribution earned him the Man of the Match award.
