Southampton are likely to face more penalties from the FA after Tonda Eckert was charged with wrongdoing.
That is according to former Manchester City financial consultant Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the treatment of the Saints intern may have influenced the FA’s decision.
Eckert has been charged with three counts of eavesdropping on opponents after an enquiry, and it is expected that he will not appeal.
Of course, the Saints’ tactics were exposed during the Championship play-offs versus Middlesbrough, when an intern, who is now employed by the club, was deployed to spy on the opposition.
Since then, there has been much debate about how the club and manager should be punished, and St Mary’s supporters are still to learn what will happen to their boss.
There are only a few weeks till the 2026-27 campaign begins, and Eckert will finally know his fate. Whatever happens, Borson believes it is the wrong choice.
Southampton must prepare for additional sanctions.
Borson expected greater punishment for the Saints in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, despite Eckert’s already “harsh” judgement.”Most people disagree with my analysis of the Southampton situation, saying that it’s completely different from the Leeds [United] situation,
” he remarked. As a result, you cannot use the Leeds circumstance to predict what should have happened. The FA has not modified the rules, thus the scenario remains similar to that of Leeds.I don’t think there is any difference in the sort of intern used. The FA may believe that the view of this issue is new compared to Leeds’ situation six or seven years ago.And some of the information in the decision suggests a harsher stance from the FA. “A young person was involved,
felt pressured to participate, and objected.”After considering all factors, it may be possible to distinguish between Bielsa’s situation and that of Leeds, resulting in a warning from the FA rather than a complete charge against Southampton.I think it is harsh. But, as I already stated, most people disagree with me on this subject, so you must realise that if the general motion differs from my perspective, it will undoubtedly be charged.
