Ruben Amorim explains why Patrick Dorgu started at right wing-back on his debut and it’s got people talking

🗣️ “I’m speechless.”
🗣️ “He really said this?”
🗣️ “A fan of Amroim but no denying this is weird.”
Amorim left everyone else in the room stunned by his answer… 😳

In the course of his explanation for why Patrick Dorgu was used as a right-wing back in their FA Cup match against Leicester City, Ruben Amorim made reference to the data analysis tool Wyscout.

On Friday night, Dorgu made his debut for Manchester United, just a few days after completing a transfer from Serie A club Leece that earned him a transfer fee of £29 million.

Before being replaced by Alejandro Garnacho at halftime, the twenty-year-old defender, who became the first player to join Ruben Amorim’s team, won more duels than any other player on the pitch. He had won six of them.

Dorgu started the FA Cup fourth round match on the right side, despite the fact that he primarily played on the opposite flank for Leece. This caused eyebrows to be raised, despite the fact that he demonstrated a high level of performance in his spells.

Amorim’s decision to sign Dorgu in January was largely influenced by the fact that he has played both on the left and right side of the field throughout his career. Dorgu is known for his versatility.

During the press conference that took place after the match, the Portuguese head coach was questioned about the reasoning behind his decision to play Dorgu on the right side of the pitch rather than the left while playing against Leicester.

“No, he played a lot of time at Lecce on both the right and the left,” Amorim said to the reporters following the tournament. “That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to a lot, to have a player like him.”

“He was a little bit anxious with his first touch of the ball,” the young man, who was forty years old, continued. It is a different league for him, and the game is played at a different speed, but he did very well anyway. He possesses speed and strength, and he will make significant progress in the future. As a team, we need to play better in order to assist these new players in performing at the appropriate level.

Amorim then brought up Wyscout, which is a data analysis tool that provides detailed statistical analysis and comprehensive video coverage of thousands of players from almost one hundred different countries.

According to him, “You can see in Wyscout that he can play both sides.” He said this with a smirk.

After United secured their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory, Amorim’s decision to mention Wyscout became a topic of discussion, despite the fact that it appeared to be made in jest.

A participant commented: “The question is why did he play Dalot on the left, when he just got a LWB?” Another person made the following observation: “There is no way that Amorim logs into his Wyscout account and decides to play Dorgu on the right.”

A third individual commented: “Amorim getting grilled for that Wyscout comment is too funny most managers use that software.”

“All of the people who are surprised by Dorgu playing on the right are, in essence, just admitting that they do not understand the player that they want to talk about,” said a fourth person. It is unquestionably possible for him to play there, and he fits in well with the system. As opposed to arguing about Dalot at LWB, this is a completely different subject.

A fifth individual commented: “He ain’t wrong to be fair, a lot of people criticised his decision but Dorgu has played on the right multiple times.”
