Portsmouth face a fresh setback for John Mousinho as a mystery EFL club join Bristol City in the race.

Bristol City are looking for a new head coach following the completion of the Championship season, although they may have difficulty appointing one of their key contenders.

The Robins hired Roy Hodgson for the final weeks of the season after parting ways with Gerhard Struber during the March international break.

The 78-year-old came out of retirement to lead the club to a 12th-place finish in the table, 11 points shy of the playoffs.

However, he has stood down from his position with the regular season now completed, leaving Bristol City in need of a permanent replacement.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has been connected with the position, but his future at Fratton Park is uncertain.

He guided Hampshire to an 18th place finish in their second season back in the Championship, winning numerous accolades throughout his time at the club.

Bristol City faces the mysterious John Mousinho competition.

According to The News, Mousinho is attracting interest from an unidentified Championship club as his future becomes more uncertain.

According to the claim, the mystery team currently has a manager, but they are preparing a change in the dugout over the summer.

If that transition occurs, Mousinho is at the top of the list of candidates to take over for next season, which might be a stumbling barrier for Bristol City’s pursuit of the 40-year-old.

This fuels suspicion that the former EFL defender/midfielder may depart Fratton Park, where he has held his first managerial role.

It is unclear whether Bristol City or the mystery club will make a formal approach to appoint Mousinho.

Sheffield United, Birmingham City, QPR, Stoke City, and possibly others are among the clubs that could make an offer for the Portsmouth manager.

While Chris Wilder, Chris Davies, Julien Stéphan, and Mark Robins are all currently in place at their respective teams, it would not be surprising if any of them decided to change managers during the off-season due to poor performance in 2025-26.

Wolves might possibly be a factor, though it is doubtful that Rob Edwards will leave the Premier League club as they transition to the second tier following their relegation this season.

Portsmouth fans will undoubtedly hope Mousinho stays, since he has become a fan favourite for his part in propelling the club back to the Championship.

John Mousinho’s departure from Portsmouth becomes increasingly imminent.

It is evident that Mousinho needs assurances from the Portsmouth owners that he will be properly supported this summer, and if he does not get them, an exit could be on the cards.

Bristol City undoubtedly has the resources to match the 40-year-old’s ambitions, and they did make the play-offs last year, demonstrating their ability to compete for a place in the Premier League.

However, there are many potentially appealing posts in the Championship that could still become available, so the Robins may want to act swiftly if they believe Mousinho is the right candidate.

Portsmouth fans will despise the possibility of losing Mousinho, but if things continue as they are, he will leave Fratton Park this summer.
