Plymouth Argyle has moved up and down the divisions several times in the last decade, most recently competing in the Championship in 2025 and League Two in 2020.

The Devon outfit finished one point outside the bottom three, leaving the team with too much to do in too little time.

Plymouth has been demoted or promoted seven times since 2010, with the club only remaining in the division nine times.

Their longest spell in one division in this era was from 2011 to 2016, when they participated in division Two, yet they still made the play-offs twice in those two years before moving up to League One.

It’s been a really exciting time for supporters, even if the disappointment of relegation has stung on four occasions since their slide from the Championship in 2010.

Plymouth Argyle’s resurgence began with the Bristol City purchase.

Plymouth were relegated from the Championship to League Two in consecutive years, 2010, 2011.

Two 21st-place results in their first two years in the fourth division have the club on the verge of dropping out of the EFL.

The Pilgrims bounced back by finishing mid-table in 2014, but it wasn’t until a year later that they were back on track, reaching the play-offs in seventh place.

The 2014 summer transfer window was crucial for the club, with several key first-team players arriving to help bridge the gap from 10th to seventh.

But one standout is Bobby Decordova-Reid, who joined on loan from Bristol City.

As the team pushed for promotion to League One, the then-winger proved an explosive presence in attack, scoring three goals and assisting ten times.

While his loan was cut short owing to an injury, he established himself as a regular in John Sheridan’s team.

Only Reuben Reid and Lewis Alessandra have more league goals for the Pilgrims in 2014/15, as the winger honed his skills at senior level following loan spells at Cheltenham Town and Oldham Athletic.

This was Decordova-Reid’s first opportunity to demonstrate his abilities at the senior level, and he delivered admirably.

Plymouth were ultimately disappointed to lose in the play-offs to Wycombe Wanderers, but the success of that campaign set them on a route back to League One and then the Championship.

Bobby Decordova-Reid benefited greatly from his loan to Plymouth.

Perhaps the highlight of De Cordova-Reid’s time at Plymouth came on the last day of the season.

His third-minute shot opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town, securing a top-seven finish ahead of Luton Town, with only three points separating the teams.

With the Hatters won 2-0 against Stevenage, the Pilgrims needed a result from the encounter, and De Cordova-Reid assured that Sheridan’s side had little to worry about in terms of securing a play-off spot.

He signed off after the defeat to Wycombe, returning to Bristol City in the summer after his loan period ended.

This loan was crucial for his development, as he returned to the Robins’ first-team squad for 2015/16, contributing two goals and three assists in 28 Championship games.

After three successful seasons at Ashton Gate, he joined Cardiff City in a £10 million transfer.

He established himself as a Premier League star, playing for Cardiff, Fulham, and Leicester City.

But Plymouth will always remember him for his involvement in the club’s League Two play-off campaign, when he first demonstrated his abilities to the world.
