The former manager of Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has stated that he was “upset” that the club sold a player that he referred to as a “monster” while he was in charge of the Red Devils.
Before becoming United’s head coach, Solskjaer, who is now 52 years old, was a much-loved forward at the club from 1996 until 2017. He served as United’s head coach from 2018 until 2021.
The Norwegian initially took charge of the team as a caretaker manager in December of 2018, and after he oversaw a run of 14 wins in 19 matches, he signed a permanent deal in March of 2019. A permanent deal was signed by the Norwegian in March of 2019.
It is possible that he will view his time spent at United as a period of unfortunate events. A match that will undoubtedly remain in the memory of the 52-year-old is the Europa League final play-off between United and Villarreal in the 2020/21 season. United was defeated by Villarreal 11-10 on penalties.
Solskjaer, who is now the head coach of the Turkish club Besiktas, was responsible for the signing of a number of high-profile players during his time at the club. These players include Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Bruno Fernandes—among others.
On the other hand, there was a player who left the club, which caused the former forward to feel emotionally upset.
During an interview with The Athletic, Solskjaer was asked if he still gets the opportunity to watch United games. He responded by saying, “When I can.” Despite this, it is encouraging to see that Harry (Maguire) and Bruno Fernandes are doing well. To add insult to injury, Scotty McTominay is doing very well at Napoli.
“I am disappointed that we allowed him to leave because he was a significant player during the previous season when he consistently scored goals. He was significant both in terms of his heart and his understanding of the culture.
In the summer of 2024, McTominay, who is now 28 years old, moved from Manchester United to Napoli. Since then, he has contributed six goals and two assists for Antonio Conte’s team, which is currently competing for a second Serie A championship in three years.
The Norwegian player has expressed his admiration for the midfielder in a public conversation.
After being interviewed by BBC Match of the Day in 2021, he stated, “We know he can be a box-to-box midfielder.”
The fact that he is a monster of a human being is the reason why he ought to have scored a few more goals on set plays before now. I am overjoyed that he was able to score goal.
In addition, Solskjaer is not the only former manager of Manchester United who has expressed a positive opinion of the Scotland international.
“So I look to Raphael Varane [at Real Madrid] now at the end of his career, he is my kid,” Jose Mourinho said in a video that was uploaded to Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel in the previous year.
“When I look to Scott McTominay, [Paul] Pogba on the bench, play Scott McTominay in Champions League against Sevilla, he is my boy.”
