Jamie Carragher Named Best Player He Trained With at England

Throughout his Three Lions tenure, Jamie Carragher had a number of excellent colleagues, including David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard. However, when he named the best player he trained with in England, he ignored the aforementioned triumvirate.

Under Kevin Keegan’s tutelage, Carragher, a true Liverpool legend, broke his senior international duck in 1999 and went on to earn 38 caps overall. He participated for his nation in two World Cup campaigns at that time, in 2006 and 2010.

Jamie Carragher had many great teammates throughout his time with the Three Lions, such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and David Beckham. But he disregarded the previously mentioned triad when he chose the top player he trained with in England.

Carragher, a genuine Liverpool legend, broke his senior international duck in 1999 and went on to collect 38 caps overall under Kevin Keegan’s guidance. At the time, he played in two World Cup campaigns for his country, in 2006 and 2010.

When Carragher made the announcement on X (previously Twitter), he chose Paul Scholes over his former Liverpool teammate Gerrard. He penned the following in praise of the Ginger Prince, whose name is in Manchester United legend:

The finest player I trained with in England was Scholes. played the part that Gerrard currently plays for LFC and managed the game for Man U. Views!

Whether Scholes, a former player who is considered to be among the greatest passers in football history, was underutilised by the England national team has long been up for dispute. Many managers frequently employed a Gerrard–Lampard midfield combination.

The central midfielder-turned-pundit was frequently used out of position at left of midfielder instead of in his favoured centre role, which was a fairly perplexing choice, even when he was selected to play for the 1966 World Cup victors.

As part of their post-retirement routines, Carragher, 47, and Scholes, 50, have both entered the realm of punditry; nevertheless, throughout their individual careers, they performed together five times between 2001 and 2004.

Under Glenn Hoddle’s coaching, Scholes donned the renowned white shirt of England for the first time in a friendly match against South Africa in 1997. Even though he retired from club football in 2013, his last appearance was at Euro 2004 nine years prior.

In 2023, Carragher opted for Gerrard over Scholes in the age-old dispute between Lampard and Gerrard on That Peter Crouch Podcast. “Isn’t that even close? People believe that I dislike Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard,” he remarked.

“You know how I say, ‘They were great players, but it’s not even a debate, it’s not close,’ when this debate comes up? What ends this argument, I’ll tell you, is that both Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson attempted to sign him. They also had Lampard and Scholes.
