Former referee Keith Hackett anticipated that Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte would receive a suspension for allegedly headbutting Kai Havertz during the FA Cup triumph against Arsenal.

Following a mundane first half, tensions escalated in the second as United gained the advantage through Bruno Fernandes, only to be equalised by Gabriel Magalhaes after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card. Nonetheless, the match escalated dramatically with 20 minutes remaining when Harry Maguire was deemed to have committed a foul on Havertz within the penalty area.

A penalty was granted, inciting a widespread altercation in the penalty area as United players were enraged with Havertz. In the confrontation, Ugarte seemingly headbutted the German player; however, no sanction was imposed on the midfielder as VAR was not in use.

In his editorial for the Daily Telegraph, Hackett asserted that Ugarte may face a retrospective ban from the FA. “A mass confrontation presents numerous complexities,” he stated.

“I was the individual positioned centrally during the confrontation between these two teams at Old Trafford many years ago.” The Football Association will undoubtedly examine this by penalising both teams for their inability to manage their players.

I am certain they will scrutinise the unlawful usage of the head. I believe Ugarte executed a definitive headbutt, which should have been recognised and addressed.

I will be disheartened if the FA fails to take action. The FA will reach out to the match officials, aware that the referees’ report will be available by 9 AM on Monday morning.

The match officials will be queried over their observations pertaining to a possible headbutt. If they claim otherwise, the FA will consider this, and there is a possibility that the player may face retrospective charges, along with both teams.

The FA have since communicated that further disciplinary action against Manchester United will not be taken after the FA Cup third round match at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
