Harry Maguire scored the game-winning goal in injury time against his former club Leicester, allowing Manchester United to come from behind and win 2-1. This victory allowed Manchester United to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
As Bruno Fernandes swung in the free kick that he headed past Mads Hermansen, it appeared that the defender was in an offside position. However, because there was no video assistant referee in action at this stage of the competition, the goal was awarded.
United, who have made it to the championship game in both of the most recent two seasons, made it past the fourth round for the tenth time in eleven seasons.
There was optimism within Old Trafford that United would not struggle as they had done so frequently on their own turf in recent times, even though they were playing against a team that had lost eight Premier League games in their last nine matches together.
On the other hand, that did not take very long to disappear over time. The volume of the crowd began to decrease, and then it was followed by groans when the ball was played backwards, as well as frustration at the lack of intensity and creativity in the execution of the game. The hosts lacked motivation, played at a pace that might be considered walking, and appeared to be devoid of any ideas.
Immediately prior to the halftime break, Leicester made the most of that opportunity. There was ample time and space for Bilal El Khannouss to skip past Leny Yoro and pull the ball back for Wilfred Ndidi, who was unmarked. However, Andre Onana was able to save Ndidi’s shot, but the ball ricocheted off Bobby De Cordova-Reid and went over the line.
Patrick Dorgu, who was playing well in his first game, was taken out of the game at halftime and replaced by Alejandro Garnacho. Ruben Amorim was attempting to breathe new life into his team, but it took them more than an hour to get their first shot on target of the evening.
When the opportunity presented itself, the only thing that prevented Garnacho’s shot from going over the goal line was an incredible last-ditch clearance from Caleb Okoli, which hit the crossbar before ultimately being hooked away.
Despite this, United’s momentum continued to increase, and they were able to bring the score back to even within three minutes. Rasmus Hojlund was located by Garnacho’s cross, but Wout Faes was able to prevent him from connecting with you. Nevertheless, Zirkzee was able to side-foot his first goal since December 19 into the empty net after the ball fell to him in the perfect trajectory.
Manchester United has reached an agreement on personal terms to sign a generational talent worth £89 million to replace Alejandro Garnacho, who is leaving the club.
From that point on, it appeared as though extra time was more likely than either team finding a winner.
Maguire, however, was able to get United out of jail by connecting with Fernandes’ wonderful delivery in the final seconds of stoppage time in the second half.
