According to reports, Frank Lampard is in negotiations with Burnley to take over as their permanent manager, succeeding Vincent Kompany. The former Chelsea midfielder left the Blues last summer after acting as their interim manager for a brief period of time after Graham Potter was fired, and he hasn’t been employed since.

According to talkSPORT, Lampard is eager to return to management and has surfaced as a potential successor to Kompany at Burnley. Earlier this month, Kompany left the Clarets to join Bayern Munich, where Craig Bellamy was appointed as the team’s interim head coach.

Burnley and Lampard are rumored to be in the early stages of their talks, with club executives hoping to make plans in order to get ready for life back in the Championship. Last season, despite winning five games and only accruing 24 points, they were relegated from the Premier League.

According to the report, Bellamy is also a candidate to take over as permanent manager of Burnley after working as Kompany’s assistant supervisor. The Welshman might still accompany Kompany to Bayern Munich, though, to work in the club’s backroom.

After winning his big managerial break with Derby County, Lampard guided the Rams to the Championship play-offs at the conclusion of his first campaign. Subsequently, he went back to Stamford Bridge to oversee Chelsea, serving for 17 months until his dismissal in the early months of 2021.

After retiring from international duty, the former England player took over as manager of Everton. Sean Dyche succeeded him after a year. After Potter’s departure, Lampard rejoined Chelsea three months later for another stint in the dugout. He departed at the conclusion of the 2022–2023 campaign.

If Lampard is hired by Burnley, he will have to live up to high expectations because the club is desperate to get back into the Premier League after being relegated. They are among the early favorites, along with Leeds United, Middlesbrough, and Coventry City, to win promotion from the Championship.

April brought rumors that Lampard was being considered to take charge of Canada and guide them to the 2026 World Cup. The Telegraph claims that after their initial discussions, he decided not to accept the job because it did not seem like “the right opportunity.”

“I’m enjoying being with the family and looking to get back at some point,” he recently said, acknowledging that he would be eager to return to management for the right club. Though, as I’ve said before, I’m enjoying my time with my family, I’m eager to start working again if the right opportunity arises.

It’s nice to cherish the time I get to spend with all of my kids because it’s a demanding job. You enjoy your work and are aware of the challenges it presents in the modern world. All of the clubs I’ve worked with have been enjoyable. For various reasons, they’ve all presented significant challenges. Let’s see what happens. I enjoy working with players to help them and the team.
