As he gets closer to taking over as manager of Chelsea, Enzo Maresca has already expressed his feelings about Cole Palmer.

The Italian is a strong contender to succeed Mauricio Pochettino, and Chelsea has requested formal permission from Leicester to speak with him.

Leicester City is expected to receive around £10 million in compensation, and he is expected to sign a two-year contract with a third option.

With a fantastic 97-point season in the Championship, Maresca led Leicester back into the Premier League and won numerous awards for the style of play displayed.

The 44-year-old managed Manchester City’s Under 23 team, which won the Premier League 2, during a portion of his apprenticeship under Pep Guardiola.

Palmer, who has already established himself as Chelsea’s talisman following an incredible 25-goal season for the Blues, met him there.

Palmer and Maresca would reunite in the FA Cup match between Leicester and Chelsea, and the coach praised Palmer’s abilities.

“The only difference is, unfortunately, with City, he had many players like him so he struggled a little bit,” Maresca stated during his press conference. Now that he has more room at Chelsea and is expressing himself, Cole is the player that everyone is observing.”

Palmer signed a £40 million deal to join Chelsea after scoring goals in the Community Shield and Super Cup to start the season.

Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 appears to include him, which further validates his decision to leave City for first-team football.

He continued, “I don’t know to be honest, this is a question for Cole,” in response to the query of whether Palmer made the right choice.

“However, it’s probably best not to commit to playing every game. As I’ve mentioned numerous times, there are players who, regrettably, didn’t play much this season and come to me or the club to request to leave. In the end, they labor daily to play, not to sit on the bench, and they are unhappy when they are not able to play.

“Cole also makes the decision to leave Chelsea in order to play more minutes. Cole’s impact was evident whether observing him during daily training sessions or during his brief playing time for City. Regarding Cole as a player, nobody at City had any reservations.”

Should Maresca be appointed, he is expected to bring assistant and former City and Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero in as part of his coaching staff.
