Darren Ferguson is reportedly linked with a sentimental return to management at an EFL club.

Darren Ferguson could soon rejoin with some familiar faces.

The 54-year-old has been out of job since he was fired by Peterborough United in October.

However, Ferguson is expected to return to the dugout in the near future.

Who are the prospects for Salford City’s new manager?

According to talkSPORT BET, Ferguson is the overwhelming frontrunner to take over at League Two club Salford City.

The fourth-tier club is looking for a new manager after sacking Karl Robinson just over a week after losing the play-off final to Notts County.

Ferguson is the 2/1 favourite to succeed Robinson, with Darren Moore (6/1), David Artell (8/1) and Steve Bruce (10/1) also in contention.

How young Fergie’s Manchester United connections could work in his benefit.

If Ferguson is offered the post, he will have a professional reunion with Salford co-owners David Beckham and Gary Neville.

Ferguson, the son of famous manager Sir Alex Ferguson, was at Manchester United from 1990 to 1994.

The midfielder’s time at United overlapped with Beckham and Neville, however the latter two did not fully break into the team until Ferguson left for Wolves.

Other Red Devils luminaries linked with Salford include Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes, who, unlike Beckham and Neville, are not co-owners but have positions in the club’s technical, football, commercial, and recruitment departments.

Ferguson’s new role at Salford would be his fourth club management position since retiring from football.

Ferguson’s managing career at a glance.

The 54-year-old has previously coached Preston North End, Doncaster Rovers, and Peterborough United on four occasions.

Ferguson began his managerial career with the Posh in 2007, and led them from League Two to the Championship until leaving in November 2009.

After a year in charge at Preston, he returned to Peterborough for a second tenure in January 2011.

Ferguson failed to duplicate his promotion heroics, although he did guide the Posh to the EFL Trophy in 2013/14.

After leaving Peterborough in February 2015, he joined Doncaster Rovers.

Ferguson supervised the club’s relegation from League One, however he soon returned the team to the third division by automatic promotion.

He then resigned in June 2018, having secured Rovers’ League One status, before returning to Peterborough for the third time in January 2019 following Steve Evans’ firing.

Ferguson led the Posh back into the Championship, but resigned in February 2022 after a defeat to Derby County left them five points from safety.

Ferguson, however, could not stay away from London Road and returned to the club for a remarkable fourth term in January 2023.

He led the Posh to two more EFL Trophy titles but was unable to secure promotion to the Championship.

Since his debut in 2007, Ferguson has played 678 games for Peterborough in all competitions.

However, if Ferguson is offered the post, Salford will be a very different challenge.

The 54-year-old’s major goal is to get Salford promoted to League One, a tier the club has never achieved in its 86-year history.

Ferguson’s record of five promotions will be a big role in Salford’s decision, especially given that the team has been in League Two purgatory for seven seasons since being promoted from the National League.
