In order to prevent losing important players for a small portion of their worth in the summer, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has stated that efforts are being made to sign them to longer-term contracts.
The Blades are unable to sell their players at a profit or risk losing them for nothing the following summer because players have repeatedly allowed their contracts to run to the last year.
As they approached the latter years of their contracts, Sheffield United had to sadly say goodbye to players like Gustavo Hamer, Sander Berge, and Iliman Ndiaye. Twelve months after winning the Championship Player of the Year award, the latter returned to Coventry City for a mere £6 million.
But the brutal cycle goes on. While Sydie Peck, Michael Cooper, and Harrison Burrows begin the last 18 months of their contracts in the new year, Femi Seriki is in the last year of his.
Chris Wilder provides positive updates on contract negotiations for a crucial Sheffield United quartet.

Fans of the Blades have been concerned that if they weren’t promoted, their remaining assets would be sold for almost nothing in the summer. This would be extremely unfortunate, particularly for someone like Peck, who has a huge ceiling and was courted by teams like Brentford and West Ham United this past summer.
Chris Wilder has disclosed that negotiations for new contract extensions are going well, with certain important players seeing their future in South Yorkshire, which is a rare bit of good news from Bramall Lane.According to the Sheffield Star, Wilder acknowledged that not all of the news this season has been positive. “I don’t believe that statement has caused any controversy.
“So, hopefully, the younger players, the Femi’s and the other players that we’re looking to tie down and add and extend their contracts, that’ll give us a little bit of good news for the supporters.”We’re getting closer. While Carl [Shieber, Head of Football Administration] and Steve [Bettis, CEO] are putting in extra effort with agents,
what matters most is that those players see their immediate futures with us, which is positive. They wish to sign. They see their immediate future here, and they have good reason to do so; they are not trying to flee. They have a management that cares about them and wants to create a competitive squad, and they receive excellent coaching and care.”
Chris Wilder provides an update on the contract status of Hamza Choudhury.

However, there are other contract concerns at Bramall Lane that require attention in addition to those involving Seriki, Peck, Burrows, and Cooper.
Hamza Choudhury, a versatile midfielder and right-back, signed a one-year contract with Sheffield United in the summer from Leicester City. Chris Wilder is familiar with the 29-year-old because he played with the Blades on loan during the second half of the 2024–25 season.
With the exception of the 1-0 victory against Bristol City, for which he was suspended after receiving two yellow cards at Portsmouth the previous game, he has started every game for which he has been available since his arrival. Many clubs were interested in him, so he chose to come to us.
Regarding Choudhury, Wilder remarked, “His versatility is great; he gives absolutely everything day in, day out.”When they won the Championship at Leicester a few years ago, he gave it his all for Enzo Maresca. He did so during my time. That’s why it’s not going back to people who have played for you, particularly when you have to make snap decisions.
“However, I’m not waiting two or three months to learn about a player; I am fully familiar with the character. They jumped right in, and I am aware of them.”
Because of Seriki’s knee injury, Choudhury has played a significant position in the Blades team from the beginning. However, Wilder anticipates that the former Leicester player will play a significant role this year and in future seasons, even after the 23-year-old catches up and probably assumes that starting right-back position. The ceiling is high, of course, and we’re working to attain it with everyone. However, unquestionably, a
Wilder continued, “He’s a smart businessman for us and someone I want to keep around.”
Sheffield United supporters will be thrilled by new contract changes.

Sheffield United will benefit from having someone like Choudhury on board, but their supporters will be particularly pleased if they can sign players like Seriki, Peck, Cooper, and Burrows to new contracts in the upcoming months.
Maintaining those assets not only helps the Blades stay competitive in the Championship on their path to a potential return to the Premier League, but it also means that, should they ever be sold, they will have complete control over the asking price rather than being held captive by purchasing clubs.
Due to their Friday night matchup with Wrexham, Chris Wilder’s team, presently ranked 12th, has an opportunity to move up into the top 10 before everyone else plays this weekend. They would be just one point away from a play-off berth with a victory.
Being in a position where they’re competing for the top eight is positive since it’s virtually unanimously acknowledged that the Blades still have a few gears to hit. If they can convince players to sign extensions, it’s a statement that they believe the team is headed in the right direction.
After that, the South Yorkshire team will be able to draw in stronger players with Premier League aspirations. If a player like Peck is sold, you would think the club could receive a large sum to ease some of their current financial strain.
The club’s most crucial off-field task this season was probably getting those vital players new contracts, and if those agreements are reached, Bramall Lane will see some much-needed positivity.
