Bristol City have joined Burnley in the race for Steven Gerrard as he makes his final decision

Bristol City are expected to be one of the few Championship clubs looking for a new manager at the end of the season, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of their final game against Stoke City this weekend.

Following Gerhard Struber’s resignation, Roy Hodgson became manager of the Robins for the second time in his career. In his six league games as Bristol City manager, he has two wins, two draws, and two losses.

Hodgson’s return to Bristol City shattered records, although he is about to turn 79 and will not be in the dugout for the 2026/27 season. The club’s 12th season at this level, following promotion in 2015, and they need to get going and compete after missing out on the play-offs this year.

Bristol City will be looking for long-term managers to succeed Hodgson, and FLW has exclusively revealed that Russell Martin is one prospective candidate under consideration. However, as the last day approaches, new names emerge on a regular basis, and clubs may be battling for the same instructors.

Burnley and Bristol City are competing for Steven Gerrard.

Wayne Rooney has lately expressed his appreciation for Hodgson, but another of Hodgson’s former England captains is now being connected with the vacant position at Ashton Gate ahead of the summer.

Steven Gerrard has already been linked with a move to Bristol City, and journalist Pete O’Rourke has stated that the famous Liverpool figure is in line to succeed Hodgson.

Gerrard is open to playing in the Championship, but they already have competition for his services. According to today’s updates, Gerrard or Craig Bellamy might succeed Scott Parker at Burnley.

Gerrard captained England 38 times, including under Steve McLaren and Fabio Cappelo. However, he was Hodgson’s regular captain in Euro 2012 and the World Cup in 2014.

Steven Gerrard’s career to date and why Burnley makes sense.

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq in October 2025, and his next steps in management could be in the Championship to reestablish his career. Both Burnley and Bristol City would make sense for him in the next stage of his career.

Despite doing some punditry work after retirement, the 45-year-old moved fast into management. He hasn’t managed in the Championship or the EFL as a whole yet.

He originally made his name with Rangers, as he led the club to the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title, ending Celtic’s domination and staying unbeaten in the process. That accomplishment won him a move to Aston Villa, where he showed early promise but struggled to maintain the consistency he had in Scotland.

As a result, when he was eventually fired, his reputation suffered. Instead, Gerrard took on a new challenge with Al-Ettifaq, adopting a completely different football culture and project. He has been out of job since.

Bristol City might be able to entice him away from a team like Burnley, which is in the north west and offers parachute payments. But tossing their hat in the ring makes sense. However, keeping a watch on Lee Carsley and others may be a better option for Bristol City.
