During his time leading Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has been a frequent offender when it comes to venting his frustration at Premier League officials, as evidenced by the enormous fines he has had to pay.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has incurred significant fines as a result of his repeated run-ins with Premier League officials.
When he oversees his final game against Wolves on Sunday, May 19, 2023–24, the German’s illustrious career at Liverpool comes to an end.
In addition to the trophies and special moments, his tense relationship with referees has continuously added drama to his nine-year tenure in Merseyside, according to the Mirror.
The Football Association has charged the 56-year-old four times, fining him a staggering £158,000. Three of the cases were related to arguments he had with referees.
After Liverpool’s thrilling 1-0 victory over Manchester City in October 2022, one such charge was made. Bernardo Silva violently pulled Mohamed Salah’s shirt, and Klopp was furious that a foul wasn’t called. Standing just inches away from assistant Gary Beswick, the German confronted him and yelled at him.
The FA’s later investigation characterized Klopp’s actions as “aggression” and included a quote of him asking, “How could you not? “How could you not?” at Beswick for neglecting to call a foul on Liverpool. Paul Tierney is one of his refereeing opponents who is notable for having a major falling out with Klopp in the later years of his time at Liverpool.
“I have no problems with any referees, only you,” the German manager was seen on camera yelling at Tierney following a furious 2-2 draw with Spurs in December 2021, during which Andy Robertson was sent off for a reckless challenge on Emerson Royal.
The relationship between Klopp and Tierney became even more icy, if that’s even possible, after the Liverpool manager sustained a hamstring strain and received a yellow card for excessive celebration following the Reds’ thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham in the previous season.
Jota scored the game-winning goal, and Klopp legged it to fourth official John Brooks. The 56-year-old is reported to have yelled at Brooks, “Without you, without you,” suggesting that his team won the game in spite of the referees. His antics cost him a two-match touchline ban and £75,000 in lost revenue.
After Sunday’s match, Klopp will probably be overjoyed to put his tumultuous history with the referees to rest as his time at Anfield draws to an end.
