Blackburn Rovers rejected off late-season interest from several Premier League clubs in 19-year-old center-back Tom Atcheson.

Blackburn had one of the quieter transfer windows in the EFL, with three new signings and the permanent extension of Moussa Baradji’s loan being the sole additions this summer.

However, Rovers did not had to say goodbye to a large number of players. Sondre Tronstad and Ryan Hedges left at the end of their contracts, while a few players went out on loan.

It could have been much worse, however, because academy star Atcheson had, and still has, admirers in the top flight.

According to TEAMtalk, Blackburn turned down late interest in Atcheson this summer from a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, who regard the 19-year-old as a youngster who might develop into a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge.

Along with the Blues, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Liverpool are keeping an eye on him, while Newcastle United, Sunderland, and Crystal Palace made late enquiry.

Adam Wharton is presently playing for Palace, which has shown to be an ideal club for Blackburn talents to develop. Rovers regard Atcheson as their most promising academy graduate since the 22-year-old.

The center-back, who turns 20 later this month, made his senior debut at Ewood Park in the latter stages of last season under Michael O’Neill, who was balancing Northern Ireland duties with an interim term at Blackburn.

O’Neill gave Atcheson his first senior cap for the Green and White Army, indicating that he was a fan of the teenager at club level, something Tony Mowbray also shares.

The center-back was given the number six shirt this summer and has played every minute of league action he could, missing Saturday’s defeat at Preston North End after being sent off against Lincoln City the week before.

Blackburn haven’t been the best at securing improved contracts for its star players in recent years, with Lewis Travis, Callum Brittain, and Tyrhys Dolan all going for reduced rates or even free in the last year or so.

They appear to have learnt from their mistakes with Atcheson, signing him to an undefined “long-term deal” in April ahead of his lengthy tenure with the squad at the end of the season.

While it’s unclear how long that deal will last, his previous contract was slated to expire at the end of next season, so it’ll at least ensure that Blackburn has all of the cards when it comes to a potential future sale, assuming the 19-year-old develops at the rate that many predict.

Wharton left the club in January 2024 for a cost that rose to £22 million, so if Atcheson’s potential is realised, the East Lancashire club might receive a hefty eight-figure amount.

There may be a lot of excitement about the Northern Ireland international, but he has played fewer than 20 EFL games, so he is unlikely to waltz into a Premier League club and play consistently, which could be detrimental to his immediate advancement.

Staying at Ewood Park ensures he receives the essential game time at a respectable level to progress, as opposed to the occasional cup game and youth team football for a top academy.

If Blackburn wants to maximise the revenues from the 19-year-old, they must retain him at the club for the next couple of years.

Furthermore, with the lack of action in the window exacerbating an already tense climate at Ewood Park surrounding the ownership, selling a key player and one of the brightest stars in the second division with no time left to replace him may have fueled fan rage.
