Birmingham City are exploring an approach for midfielder Max Bird from Championship rivals Bristol City this summer.

According to BirminghamLive, the Blues are targeting the 25-year-old as they look for midfield reinforcements.

Bird is now in the final year of his current deal with Bristol City, which has paved the way for a possible departure from Ashton Gate.

The former Derby County player joined the Robins on a three-year agreement in the summer of 2024, following an initial loan move earlier that year, and his contract will expire in 2027.

Bird made just 15 Championship appearances for Bristol City in 2025-26, including only four starts, due to a calf injury that held him out for the whole first half of the season, and he could possibly be on his way out of the club before the transfer window closes on September 1.

At this point in his career, the 25-year-old has plenty of Championship experience thanks to his time at Bristol City and Derby, where he came up through the academy system.

He made 101 appearances in the second tier with the Rams before joining for the Bristol outfit in 2024, where he’s so far appeared a total of 61 times in the league.

Bird helped the Robins gain a play-off position in 2024/25, as he was an important member of the squad as they placed sixth in the table.

He contributed one goal and eight assists, and is now being pursued by Birmingham as they seek a top eight finish in 2026/27.

Birmingham City fans are excited regarding the possibility of signing Bird from Bristol City, claiming he’s a wise option to boost the squad.

The addition of Max Bird might be very beneficial for Birmingham City and Chris Davies.

Birmingham’s true midfield options are restricted to Jhon Solis, Tomoki Iwata, and Paik Seung-ho, so another signing makes a lot of sense.

Bird has plenty of Championship experience, and he’s demonstrated his ability to fight at the top of the table since his first season with Bristol City.

While physical concerns did limit his second year at Ashton Gate, a deal to move him to St. Andrew’s may work out rather well due to his contract situation.

Of course, it will all rely on the cost of the deal, but if Birmingham can obtain a cut rate price for the 25-year-old then it may be a savvy bit of business.
