An EFL club has confirmed the departure of its manager just three hours before kick-off.

Conor Hourihane will quit his position as Barnsley head coach at the conclusion of the season, the club has announced.

The former Aston Villa midfielder takes over as temporary manager after Darrell Clarke was fired in March 2025.

However, his first full season in charge has been disappointing, with the Tykes currently 12th in League One.

Hourinhane has expressed his disappointment with the club’s lack of ambition following the sale of top scorer Davis Keillor-Dunn to Wrexham in the January transfer window.

As a result, Hourihane and club management have amicably decided to part ways, with the announcement coming just three hours before the club’s home game against Bradford City on Saturday lunchtime.

A club statement read: “Barnsley Football Club can confirm that Conor Hourihane and the club will amicably part ways at the end of the 2025/26 season.

“Following discussions between both parties, it was concluded that a change would be beneficial for both parties ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.”

Chief Executive Officer Jon Flatman added: “We’d like to thank Conor for his hard work and dedication during his tenure.

“After candid discussions between the Board and Conor, it was determined that the wisest course of action for both parties would be to seek a fresh start ahead of the 2026/27 season.

“We are now looking to ensure a smooth transition between Conor and our new Head Coach through to the end of the current campaign.”

Meanwhile, Hourihane praised the club for giving him his first managerial opportunity and promised fans that he is totally committed to the season’s remaining five games.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Club for giving me the opportunity to begin my management journey, particularly at a Club that means so much to me,” he stated.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Barnsley supporters. Barnsley will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the club every success in the future.

“After negotiations between the Club and myself, we both agreed that a change in the summer would be the best way to ensure a smooth transition. The main focus is now on the next five games and ending the season as strong as possible to give the greatest foundation for the future.”
