Shea Charles is drawing Premier League interest after impressing under Tonda Eckert, with Leeds United, Fulham, and Crystal Palace all showing interest.

Shea Charles, a Northern Ireland international with 35 matches at the age of 22, scored six goals in 38 games for Southampton, helping them reach the play-offs. Injuries and rotation caused him to start 24 of those appearances.

Leeds United have been interested in Charles for more than a month, and have made many proposals to Southampton in their pursuit of the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder. That was before Crystal Palace entered the race for Charles.

In many aspects, Charles is a Premier League midfielder, and Southampton has maintained their appraisal of him despite Leeds’ third and final bid for him. Since then, Fulham has expressed interest in Charles.

Southampton already has great options in the base of midfield with players like Caspar Jander and Flynn Downes. However, Tonda Eckert’s side has caved in at a price lower than their expectations, even if it could assist balance the books.

According to Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds’ bid for the Saints is still on the table, with the Whites hesitant to meet Southampton’s current valuation. They may revisit the deal later this summer, but interest appears to have faded.

Fulham’s bid for Charles was recently rejected. According to Simon Jones of The Daily Mail, the offer totalled around £24 million. It means Charles will remain a Southampton player as preseason gets underway.

Eckert, speaking to The Daily Echo, clarified the position despite mounting Premier League interest. He says, “Based on the season that he’s had, I believe it’s clear that there is interest.” I’m glad to have him around at the moment.

“He’s been great since the first day he returned. I believe he has demonstrated a high level of performance, and the rest is up to the club.”

Eckert and his team are now holding a pre-season camp in Germany, although some of the players involved may not be part of their 2026/27 Championship challenge. That includes Charles, even if he has been professional so far.

Fulham and Leeds United will need to be patient if they want Shea Charles.

If Southampton stick to their valuation of Charles, Leeds and Fulham may be forced to pursue alternative midfield targets rather than become embroiled in a lengthy summer transfer saga.

With both teams eager to strengthen before the season begins, committing a large percentage of their resources to a single challenging negotiation might be hazardous. However, there is an argument for being patient.

Southampton may not feel under immediate pressure to sell, but this might alter as the transfer window unfolds. If the Championship team feels the need to generate funds, reduce the salary bill, or support more additions, their negotiation position may deteriorate.

If that happens, Charles’ asking price may become more reasonable, allowing Leeds or Fulham to reconsider a move later in the window on better terms. It all depends on whether they need a midfielder right away or if they can wait, but this tale does not appear to be ended yet.
