Sam Cosgrove, a former Birmingham City and Barnsley failure, is in hot water after an altercation with a journalist in New Zealand.
Football can occasionally cause intense emotions, but for those who work in the industry, it’s sometimes best to control them.
Answering challenging questions from the media can be one of the most tough tasks for players and managers. Although it may be irritating to be asked questions they don’t want to answer, it is their responsibility to maintain composure.
Additionally, in a recent instance involving Sam Cosgrove, a former striker for Barnsley and BIrmingham City, the cost of a player losing his temper with a journalist posing questions turned out to be rather significant, both monetarily and in terms of maintaining his spot on the team.
Sam Cosgrove was fined and banned after an odd altercation with a journalist.

Sam Cosgrove, a former striker for Birmingham City and Barnsley who has been playing for Auckland FC in New Zealand, has been banned for two games, one of which has been suspended, and fined $2,000 (£850) for an altercation with a journalist that went viral online and resulted in Cosgrove threatening to have his questioner’s press credentials revoked. According to Birmingham Live, Cosgrove was found to have “failed to uphold the Australian A-League rather than the New Zealand National League.
After a tirade filled with profanity, Cosgrove told Voerman, “You won’t get back here again.” After stuff.co.nz published the exchange on their website, the video became viral. Cosgrove, who joined Auckland in 2025 and won the Golden Boot in his first season in New Zealand, was suspended after receiving a red card during the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Professional Football Australia, the players’ union, said in a statement that the club had accepted the fines after “noting the potential consequences of an unsuccessful appeal.” Football Australia was criticised by the PFA, who claimed that the penalty was “a significant departure from how similar matters have historically been addressed within the professional game.”

Cosgrove found his feet in New Zealand following some tough times in England

Sam Cosgrove, who was born in Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, played in Scotland and England until moving to New Zealand in 2025. After being found by Wigan Athletic, he initially gained recognition north of the line with Aberdeen, where he scored 47 goals in 103 games before landing a £2 million contract with Birmingham City in 2021.
But his transfer to the Championship did not work out. Over the course of two years, he made just 17 appearances for the Blues, failed to score a goal, and spent time on loan at Plymouth Argyle, Wimbledon, and Shrewsbury Town. After making an impression during his last loan stint at Home Park, where he scored twelve goals in forty games, he joined Barnsley in 2023. He made 60 appearances for Barnsley and scored seven goals during his second loan stint, this time with Stockport County.
However, his career was revitalised after he relocated to New Zealand. After defeating Sydney FC 1-0 in the league’s Grand Final, Auckland FC won the 2026 A-League championship. Cosgrove, who made 29 appearances for the team and finished the season with twelve goals and four assists, won the Golden Boot. Although he hasn’t scored yet, he has already participated in their two league games this season.
Cosgrove appeared to have settled in New Zealand after going through some challenging times in England; the Birmingham Live report on this occurrence called him “one of Blues’ biggest transfer misses of the last decade.” As his current team looks to defend their league title, the striker will be hoping that this setback is soon forgotten and that he can resume contributing.
