Neil Warnock has identified the 3 EFL Championship clubs he believes are best placed to secure promotion this season, with his selections likely to generate plenty of debate among supporters.

Neil Warnock is perhaps the most famous manager in EFL history, having been promoted from the Football League eight times, three of which have occurred since the EFL Championship’s inception.

The experienced manager turned commentator has spoken out on the outcome of the 2026/27 season, despite the fact that many of his old clubs have already begun their Championship campaigns. These include Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers, Cardiff City, and Sheffield United.

His promotions to the last three teams were all well-known at the time, with the 77-year-old regarded as one of the best managers in the history of each. His QPR side dominated the division in 2010/11, whereas Cardiff and Sheffield United were built on solid foundations.

Neil Warnock’s EFL Championship Predictions for 2026/27

Of course, many neutrals and commentators believe that relegated clubs such as West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Burnley are the most likely to get promoted. Millwall, Southampton, and Middlesbrough all made the play-offs and are highly regarded.

Warnock has spoken out on the Championship’s top-tier struggle, as part of Midnite’s ‘Built Different Index’ launch, which ranks all 92 clubs in the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two.

He stated: “I believe I would choose Burnley, West Ham, and possibly Middlesbrough. I believe those would be my three to move up. I believe QPR will surprise a few people. Despite being viewed as relegation fodder, the team has some talented players who should be kept fit.Going down,

you have to look at teams like Derby County, Stoke City, and Preston North End. You understand how difficult it is to be down there. After watching their first game, I believe Watford could be a dark horse. They might be a dark horse for success. But, ultimately, I believe it will be a dog-eat-dog situation. You are aware of Portsmouth’s existence. I believe there are five or six clubs that I would be astonished to see competing for the playoffs.

I believe they’ve got it all on. Blackburn [Rovers] and Tony Mowbray, too, but I felt their team looked fantastic against Wolves, and he has some good players. Tony excels in maximising his team’s potential.Sorry, but I forgot about Lincoln. I believe they will be able to stay up.

I know the manager has left, which is unfortunate, but I was quite impressed with the squad’s performance versus Middlesbrough. “They had to defend a lot, but everyone will have to defend against Middlesbrough.”But I thought their attitude was really good, so I wouldn’t write them off just yet, even though I believe the bookies will have them down as the odds-on favourite to lose, won’t they?”

Neil Warnock knows what he’s talking about with the EFL.

Warnock is the expert on the Championship. His last three promotions are especially outstanding given the EFL’s reformatted structure. He led Sheffield United to the Premier League in 2006, QPR to the Championship title in 2011, and then accomplished possibly his most astounding feat with Cardiff City in 2018.

Sheffield United: 385, 165, 98, and 122. QPR: 88, 35, 28, and 25. Cardiff City: 144, 59, 29, and 56. Three promotions in the contemporary era, all to the Premier League, demonstrate why he was one of the EFL’s best promotion specialists.

Eddie Howe, Steve Evans, Chris Wilder, Steve Bruce, and Phil Parkinson have all received three promotions since 2004, matching his total. Warnock is remarkable in that he has four promotions into the top tier in total, and his eight career promotions still hold the English record.

Middlesbrough are the dark horses for promotion in 2026โ€“27.

In many ways, Middlesbrough, Wolves, and West Ham look like the three most likely teams to gain promotion this season. Boro’s quality under Kim Hellberg, combined with their good acquisitions, make them genuine competitors, whilst Wolves and West Ham have the Premier League quality and resources to recover quickly.

I also expect a surprise package to break into the top eight, like Hull City and potentially Millwall did last season. Southampton and Burnley will almost probably have an impact on the promotion battle, especially given their parachute payments. However, Middlesbrough appear to be the dark horse without such an advantage.

With the Championship looking so tight, the gap between the top teams is likely to be very small, and the closing weeks of the season might be exciting. However, the first games of the season should indicate who some of the actual contenders are and who are more likely to be on the other end of the table.
