Millwall are apparently holding out for a club-record transfer fee as valued asset and star winger Femi Azeez continues to draw interest from Premier League newcomers Hull City.

That’s according to the Sun, as the Lions prepare to begin their second full Championship season under Alex Neil this weekend.

Millwall are currently regarded as one of the division’s ‘almost’ teams, having failed to make the play-offs for many seasons before finally hitting the top six last season and being unable to reach the top tier for the first time in 36 years.

After missing out on automatic promotion to Ipswich Town on the penultimate day, Sergej Jakirovic’s Tigers defeated the South London club 2-0 in the play-off semi-finals before defeating Middlesbrough at Wembley Stadium.

Millwall have had an exciting summer transfer window so far, with six incomings and nine departures sanctioned, and while some would expect Azeez to leave, it would be a significant blow to the club’s season goals.

The 25-year-old considerably increased his goal production by 11 goals and six assists, and he was attracting serious transfer interest from clubs in both the second division and the Premier League at the moment.

After impressing in the Championship last season and attracting prior interest from Premier League clubs, Azeez will undoubtedly believe he has earned a first chance at playing in the division, and Hull’s move, while coming after previous transfer difficulties, does not necessarily imply that a move for him is a ‘last resort’.

However, the Sun’s allegation about the club being in ‘pole position’ came after Jakirovic stated that a high-profile bid for Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey has been called off following weeks of speculation, as has a move for OGC Nice’s Mohamed-Ali Cho.

However, the Bosnian appears to have dealt a big blow to one of Millwall’s divisional rivals, as it has been claimed that, after initially closing in on a move to Birmingham City, Joe Gelhardt’s return to HU3 might be completed in the coming days.
