Bolton Wanderers are back to the Championship for the first time since being demoted in the 2018-19 season, and they could benefit from a busy month to stay competitive.
After spending their longest period outside of England’s top two divisions due to major financial issues that nearly led to the club’s demise in August 2019, Bolton has steadily progressed through Leagues Two and One, winning the latter’s play-off final against Stockport County in May.
Steven Schumacher brought in 14 new signings last summer before adding eight in the winter transfer window, and the former Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City manager is eager to add to his squad once more.
With a slow transfer market across the EFL and Europe due to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Bolton’s Sporting Director, Fergal Harkin, and Head of Recruitment, Jimmy Dickinson, will have a busy few weeks, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.
So far this summer, Bolton has signed Scottish midfielder David Watson from Kilmarnock, as well as Liverpool’s Luca Stephenson, Hull City’s Akin Famewo, and Rangers’ Ben Davies.
They’ve also signed Kyliane Dong on loan from Augsburg and versatile right-back Gaizka Larrazabal from Casa Pia. Larrazabal’s signing came a day before the club confirmed Entrepreneur Equity Partners’ (EEP) minority stake.
That piqued supporters’ interest in what would happen at the club with investment, but it’s been a quiet few of weeks, however new information will revive some excitement among the following.
Bolton receives cash infusion from new American investors

According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, Bolton Wanderers have got a £5 million cash injection from their new American investors, EEP.
Nixon added that the club disclosed an allotment of 3.15 million news shares purchased at £1.61 each in a transaction completed in late July.
They remain distinct from the club’s more important stakeholders and remain C shares, but they do indicate that EEP now owns a ‘good slice’ of the Championship team.
In a statement issued a few weeks ago confirming Bolton’s relationship with EEP, chairperson Sharon Brittan confirmed that Tim Leiweke, who was pardoned by US President Donald Trump last year, is now a member of the club’s board of directors, with fellow EEP founder Keegan McDonald serving as an observer.
Following their promotion to Serie A last season, Leiweke and Francesca Bodie, the other EEP founder, made a significant investment in Italian team Venezia in May 2026.
Bolton need to move in the transfer window.

If this investment is to be employed in the transfer market, as it has been at Venezia with the arrival of Akor Adams from Sevilla, Wanderers could benefit from moving quickly.
A goalkeeper appears to be in high demand, with reports linking Ipswich Town’s new signing Kayne van Oevelen and former Bosnia-Herzegovina international Asmir Begovic.
It would not be surprising to see the defence strengthened further, both at centre-back and left-back, with defensive midfield maybe requiring a new acquisition, with Ethan Erhahon once again ill and Schumacher relying on Xavier Simons.
Schumacher has confirmed that Larrazabal is a right-back, leaving only new recruit Dong and Barbados international Thierry Gale as first-team wingers.
Sam Dalby is presently the lone first-team striker, with attacking midfielder John McAtee and youngster Toby Ritchie widely anticipated to go this summer.
