As Southampton awaits the conclusion of Tonda Eckert’s allegations, the club remains active in the transfer market and must carefully examine all players’ futures before making final judgements.

Indeed, Southampton do not know who will be in the dugout on the first day of next season at Vicarage Road against Watford, as German manager Tonda Eckert has been prosecuted by the FA for his role in the now-infamous’spygate’ affair.

While a ban has not yet been confirmed, it is possible that one will be issued, and the Saints must have a backup plan in place in case that occurs, with the ultimate decision on some of their players’ futures on wait.

Southampton would need to employ someone else in this event, and they may take a different approach than Eckert regarding who remains and who leaves the existing squad.

Regardless of who is in charge next season, Southampton must carefully consider the futures of all of their players, including one who moved to the South Coast for a potential £17 million only two years ago.

Southampton must reassess Cameron Archer’s sale this summer, amid West Bromwich Albion interest.

A few familiar faces have returned to the Southampton squad for pre-season training at Staplewood after loan spells elsewhere.

Ben Brereton Diaz, Aaron Ramsdale, Damion Downs, and Yukinari Sugawara have all returned to the Saints squad this summer, and each will be assessed to determine the best move for their futures.

In all likely, no exits will be sanctioned until Eckert’s destiny is determined, giving the club plenty of time to contemplate the prospective sale of Cameron Archer, who has recently piqued the curiosity of West Brom.

Archer, 24, progressed through Aston Villa’s development system and thrived on loan at Preston North End and Middlesbrough before joining Sheffield United permanently in the summer of 2023.

Villa would use his buyback option after just one year and then sell him to Southampton in the summer of 2024 for a maximum £17 million, although he has struggled to justify that figure in his two years with the club.

Archer would score only twice in 35 Premier League games for the Saints as they were relegated from the top flight in 2025, and after returning to the Championship, he struggled to find a place in the side under either Will Still or Eckert.

He would only score four goals and assist three in 30 Championship games last season, with the majority of his appearances coming off the bench, but he showed indications of rebirth in the later stages of the season.

Archer scored twice and assisted three times in his final six appearances of the season, two of which were from the bench, and he did not play the full 90 minutes in either.

His end-of-season form must have given Eckert pause for thinking, and despite the recent £9 million signing of Lewis Dobbin from Aston Villa, Archer might still play a significant role for Southampton next season.

Despite his limited minutes with Southampton, the 24-year-old has 22 goals and ten assists in 70 Championship appearances, averaging nearly one goal every other game.

Under contract at St Mary’s until the summer of 2028, Southampton would be remiss to simply allow Archer to leave on the cheap, especially to a division rival, and must consider the possibility of him staying beyond the summer window, with a player clearly in the mix despite his struggles on the South Coast.

Southampton should try to keep Cameron Archer this summer, regardless of Tonda Eckert’s fate.

After displaying good form in the latter portions of last season, Southampton must seriously consider making Archer a key member of their squad next season.

A loan deal to Scottish club Rangers fell through last January, leaving the Englishman upset, but he seized his opportunity with Southampton when it came.

If he is given the confidence and opportunity to express himself in the Southampton side for more minutes, he has the potential to be an outstanding long-term addition for the Saints.

With West Brom looming, a sale may be tempting, but Southampton must hold fire and allow the former Aston Villa attacker a fair chance to establish his worth in the Championship, where he may be handsomely rewarded.
