Sheffield United are on precarious ground again this summer, with off-field troubles continuing to detract from their possible redevelopment ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season.
Sheffield United began last season with a points deduction and spent much of the season in a relegation battle after former Reading and Hull City manager Ruben Selles’ hire went wrong.
The 2025 play-off finalists got back on track under Chris Wilder’s guidance, but the campaign was largely forgettable, with the focus this summer on avoiding mistakes from last year and re-establishing themselves as a promotion contender once more.
That remains the case, and it is possible that it will happen, but The Blades are in an uncertain situation, with current owners COH Sports served with a winding-up petition due to unpaid payments relating to the club’s takeover by Saudi prince Prince Abdullah in December 2024.
In addition, their summer window began with the sale of academy graduate Andre Brooks to Championship rivals Andre Brooks, and now another academy product, Sydie Peck, will cause additional concern for United supporters.
Brentford could be offering Sheffield United a sweetener for Sydie Peck.

Brentford, a Premier League club, has been reported to be interested in Sydie Peck, as has West Ham United, which was just relegated to the Championship.
There isn’t a guarantee that Peck will leave Bramall Lane, but interest from a top-flight club and a team that recently paid £85 million for Mateus Fernandes will make it tough for United to withstand that pressure.
Brentford may have also provided Sheffield United with a sweetener in their bid to recruit Peck, with the revelation that teenager Romelle Donovan is likely to join the Blades.
According to Mike McGrath, the South Yorkshire club has agreed to recruit the winger on a season-long loan from the Bees.
With that in mind, it’s possible that Brentford is close to reaching an agreement with United to sign their 21-year-old midfielder.
Sydie Peck is a key player for Sheffield United.

After progressing through the Arsenal and Sheffield United systems, Enfield-born Peck, who spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Oldham Athletic, has established himself as a crucial player at Bramall Lane.
Peck, an England U21 international, made his Premier League debut for United in 2023/24, and went on to make 42 appearances as the club reached the play-off final in 2024/25.
Peck then became a first-choice player for Selles before progressing further in the second part of last season under Wilder, developing as a more all-action midfielder rather than a defensive one.
With five goals and four assists, as well as seven yellow cards, Peck’s stats reflect his well-rounded style, and he was projected to continue to improve to become one of the greatest players in the Championship next season.
However, after United were forced into big money sales last summer with the departures of Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vinicius Souza and Kieffer Moore, as well as Brooks this summer amid that off-field uncertainty, the signing of Donovan may well be a positive one for United now – but may have hidden ramifications behind it with Brentford’s interest in their star midfielder.
