Millwall have been busy in the transfer market after last season’s Championship play-off tragedy, signing midfielder Jenson Metcalfe from Bradford City.

Metcalfe was nominated for League One Player of the Season last season, and he helped the Bantams reach the play-offs, where they were eliminated by eventual promotion winners Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals.

The 21-year-old, who progressed through Everton’s academy ranks, is ready for the Championship and should be a valuable asset to Millwall next season.

After guiding the Lions to an amazing third-place finish in the second division last season, manager Alex Neil will be eager to lead his team to another promotion push next season.

The Owls are striving for instant promotion back to the Championship after being demoted to League One, and they will need to have a good summer recruitment window.

With that in mind, Wednesday have discussed bringing Bannan back to Hillsborough Stadium after his winter transfer to Millwall.

The 36-year-old spent a decade and a half with the Owls before joining the Lions, and would leap at the opportunity to return to South Yorkshire if his present club were willing to facilitate such a deal.

Bannan did not start for Millwall in either of their Championship play-off semi-final matches against Hull City, which has undoubtedly increased his desire to leave Neil’s side.

Furthermore, now that the Lions have recruited Metcalfe from Bradford, they should be more willing to split ways with the Scottish metronome, despite just signing him a few months ago.

Metcalfe isn’t as imaginative as Bannan, but he has the tools and potential to become a suitable successor for the great veteran.
