Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic are monitoring a Bristol City wing-back ahead of a potential free transfer.

Prior to the summer transfer window, Bristol City’s out-of-contract asset has drawn interest from Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers, and Charlton Athletic.

While the Addicks still have work to do to avoid being demoted to League One, North End and Rovers have already guaranteed their Championship status ahead of next season.

With two games left, Charlton is six points above the second-tier relegation zone after losing 2-1 to Ipswich Town at home on Wednesday.

Nathan Jones’ team is aware that in order to be a Championship team the next season, they must defeat either Hull City or Swansea City.

Blackburn Rovers, Charlton Athletic, and Preston North End are interested in the versatile Bristol City wing-back.

After earning a play-off position the previous season, Bristol City started the second-tier campaign with a lot of hope.

With two Championship games left, the West Country team is currently ranked 12th after failing to stay up with the top six this time.

Due to the Robins’ poor performance this season, former manager Gerhard Struber was fired last month. Roy Hodgson, who is currently serving as interim head coach until the end of the season, took his position.

However, Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner, two important players at the time, were moved to Ipswich Town and Wrexham, respectively, during the winter transfer window, therefore Struber is not solely to blame for Bristol City’s failures this season.

In recent weeks, supporters have expressed their dissatisfaction with Robins owner Steve Lansdown, and regardless of Hodgson’s replacement, the summer transfer window is expected to be active.

Prior to the upcoming season, the Ashton Gate team will be in charge of player arrivals and departures. Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider has disclosed via X that Preston, Blackburn, and Charlton are all considering deals for Robins wing-back Mark Sykes.

Sykes will be available to suitors on a free transfer when his contract with Bristol City expires this summer.

The 28-year-old, who played for Oxford United before joining the West Country club in the summer of 2022, has made 152 appearances across all competitions and scored 18 goals.

Sykes is a versatile player who is equally at ease playing as a winger, midfield midfielder, and, in more recent years, wing-back. This summer, he may have several suitors vying for his services.

The possibility of losing Mark Sykes on a free transfer should disappoint Bristol City.

Even though Sykes’ Oxford contract expired four years ago and the Robins signed him on a free transfer, they should still be disappointed that they won’t be compensated for his reliable services.

The Ireland international’s performances from the previous season, which helped Bristol City secure a Championship play-off spot for the first time since winning the League One title back in 2015, will remain their favorite memories of him.

But he has always been a dependable member of the Ashton Gate team, and on Easter Monday, he scored to help Hodgson’s team overcome Sheffield United 1-0.

The Robins will finish in the top half of the Championship if they avoid losing to Birmingham City and Stoke City in their next two games thanks to their victory over the Blades.

Sykes might be acquired for free by Blackburn, Preston, or Charlton, and Bristol City will probably regret his departure.
