Sheffield United hasn’t quite had the season that many at Bramall Lane and elsewhere expected before a ball was kicked, with the Blades expected to finish mid-table in the Championship.
In recent years, we’ve grown accustomed to seeing the Steel City team compete for promotion back to the Premier League, though they haven’t always been able to reestablish themselves in the top tier.
Just 12 months ago, another opportunity to make history at Bramall Lane was missed as United were upset in dramatic manner by Sunderland in the play-off final, kicking off an eventful 11-month period.
Chris Wilder, of course, was fired by owners COH Sports before quickly returning to his boyhood club in September following Ruben Selles’ dismal six-game stay, which left the Blades at the bottom of the second division.
When evaluating the squad in this region of Sheffield on paper, it is no wonder that United’s season has been considered as a major underperformance, especially given the presence of Gus Hamer among their ranks.
The Dutch-Brazilian has become a big figure in the Championship since the turn of the decade, having previously played for Coventry City before making his high-profile move to S2 in August 2023.
However, three years later, the 28-year-old’s immediate future remains hotly debated, and this has only increased following a new disclosure from the aforementioned Wilder.
Chris Wilder reveals new details about Gus Hamer’s Sheffield United future during contract talks.

Hamer signed a four-year contract with the Blades after joining from the Sky Blues for £15 million, and he has been perhaps the most consistent member of the squad during that time.
After impressing in the Premier League despite relegation, the playmaker was voted Championship Player of the Season in 2024/25, but has had a difficult season this time around, albeit posting some decent figures.
Hamer is also one of only two players at Bramall Lane who are under contract until next summer, alongside Tyrese Campbell, and both have recently been linked with a move, while Wilder has already announced that a big roster reset will take place during pre-season.
Wilder clarified that the club will consider financial considerations while evaluating players and their current contracts. We’ll treat everyone on their own merits, but Tyrese and Gus stand out. So, we’ll talk to their agents and the athletes. Do they wish to be involved in future developments?
“So, there will be a lot of conversation between now and the end of the season among all stakeholders. Do the players want to stay? Do they want to go? But they’re still under contract,” the United manager explained.
“If a player wants to leave but there is no interest, he will stay for the next season. We obviously don’t like players dragging down their contracts, especially because the club paid a lot of money for Gus as well.”
How much Gustavo Hamer gets at Sheffield United per season amid Chris Wilder’s comments

Taking those words into consideration, FLW investigated Hamer’s ESTIMATED financial status with the Blades ahead of what appears to be an eventful summer for the Trabzonspor target.
According to Capology, the attacking midfielder is now the club’s third-highest earner, with a weekly basic salary of £30,000, which equates to a yearly salary of £1.56 million throughout each season.
Given Hamer will have played three of the four years since his arrival from Coventry, the playmaker will have earned an estimated total of £4.68 million, which will rise to £6.24 million if he plays out the final season without agreeing to new terms.
As previously said, Hamer has become the beating heart of both Paul Heckingbottom’s and Wilder’s two spells in charge, so his departure would be a significant blow, especially if United were unable to recoup the £15 million sum they paid.
