Police are investigating after a man was attacked following the Coventry City vs Sheffield Wednesday fixture.

On Saturday afternoon, Coventry City’s chance to return to the Premier League after 25 years away was dashed by a spirited effort from previously relegated Sheffield Wednesday.

A record crowd of 31,647 crowded the Coventry Building Society Arena, primarily to see the Sky Blues win an expected game against the Owls, whose troubles this season both on and off the pitch have been obvious.

Many predicted a comprehensive defeat for the Owls, who were languishing on zero points at the bottom of the Championship – but that wasn’t the case.

Frank Lampard’s side had 15 shots and six on goal, compared to Wednesday’s six shots and none on goal, but they were unable to overcome Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Pierce Charles in between the visitors’ posts.

Because of the stalemate, Coventry will have to wait to re-enter England’s top tier; they are 12 points ahead of third-placed Millwall with four games remaining, so a point away at Blackburn Rovers on Friday night will be required to cement their Premier League position.

West Midlands Police publish a statement regarding the post-Coventry City 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday incident.

However, the fallout from Cov’s goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday has yet to subside.

Following the match, footage emerged on social media showing a group of people presumably attacking a single individual, with the caption ’12 Coventry City fans ambushing a Sheffield Wednesday fan’; people in the footage after the brawl could be heard yelling ‘Sky Blue Army’.

And it appears that the video evidence was captured after the confrontation at the CBS Arena on nearby Sydnall Road, which is 0.4 mile from the complex, with West Midlands Police investigating the incident.

“We are investigating after a man was assaulted following an altercation with a group of people near Sydnall Road in Coventry on Saturday (April 11),” West Midlands Police said, as reported by Coventry Live.

“We are aware of a video circulating on social media, recognize the concern it has raised, and are analyzing it as part of the investigation.

“Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101, quoting crime reference number 20/209841/26.”

Coventry City need to focus on football things again on Friday night against Blackburn Rovers.

The film associated with the incident is disturbing to view, and it is unnecessary to be associated with football, with the police rightfully investigating given the gravity of the situation.

Coventry, on the other hand, must focus on football as well as the incident, as they need just one point to confirm their Premier League spot when they travel to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers, and they will be supported by a sold-out away end of over 7,000 people.

Rovers will be a difficult customer to figure out, having gone unbeaten in their past five games prior to their meeting against Southampton on Tuesday night, but Lampard and his team are still close to completing the task.
