Gareth Southgate’s ‘Two Demands’ to Replace Ruben Amorim as Man Utd Manager

Gareth Southgate is expected to make two demands of Manchester United’s management if he agrees to replace Ruben Amorim, whose days at Old Trafford appear to be limited. The English coach has been out of management since quitting his position as England manager following the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

The 55-year-old has since been knighted in appreciation of his national team success, which included leading them to two European Championship finals. He was never able to push his men over the finish line, but he did an excellent job of developing a struggling English team into one of the most respected nations in international football.

Southgate is said to be one of INEOS’ three candidates to replace Amorim, who is under increasing pressure following a catastrophic tenure. The Portuguese coach remains in control of United ahead of their visit to Sunderland tomorrow afternoon.

Time is Money: Southgate’s Man Utd Demands

Southgate hasn’t dabbled in club management since Middlesbrough fired him in October 2009. His time in charge at the Riverside was fairly disappointing, as his team was relegated from the Premier League to the EFL Championship.

United fans are sceptical of Southgate’s prospective hiring due to his lack of prior experience at a top club and questionable tactical decisions as England manager. But the former centre-back, a lifelong fan of the club, is hesitant of replacing Amorim.

According to Sun Sport, he will seek assurances from upper management that a long-term plan will be implemented and adhered to. One excellent aspect of his nearly eight-year reign with the Three Lions was his work with the squad, including the integration of youth and his desire to grow the team as a whole.

Southgate is eager to accept comparable support from INEOS to develop United over time, rather than being pressured to achieve rapid success. One of his other objectives is that he be permitted to adopt a methodical approach and make consistent development over a four-year period, a mindset that CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox have shared.

United’s decline in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has left fans impatient for the club to return to its former glory. If Amorim is fired and Southgate takes over, he will become the Red Devils’ eighth permanent coach, attempting to lead them back to the top of English football.

Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane To Revive Manchester United?

Southgate isn’t the only Englishman whose name has long been associated with a move to Old Trafford; Harry Kane has been connected with United every summer. England’s all-time leading scorer was the club’s primary priority, but owing to financial constraints, he had to settle for Rasmus Hojlund in the summer of 2023.

Instead, Kane headed to Bayern Munich, where he set records and ultimately won a trophy, the Bundesliga title last season. However, a release clause in his contract has fuelled speculations that he intends to return to the Premier League and break Alan Shearer’s scoring record.

GIVEMESPORT senior writer Fabrizio Romano has reported that Kane is currently only focused on winning more titles in Munich. He has just under two years remaining on his contract with the Bavarians.

A prospective Southgate appointment, however, could be of interest because the two have a close relationship from their time working together at the international level. The 32-year-old stated that his previous manager restored the thrill of playing for England and that he has contributed to his career as a player.

“He has been an extremely essential manager in my career. Giving me the England captaincy was a huge honour, and I’ll be eternally grateful.”

Under Southgate, Kane became the country’s all-time leading scorer with 61 goals, including a Golden Boot-winning campaign at the 2018 World Cup. His final appearance under his former manager was in a 2-1 loss to Spain in last summer’s Euro 2024 final.
