Brendan Rodgers’ connection with Celtic supporters has been everything but smooth.
When the Northern Irish manager arrived in Glasgow in the summer of 2016, he provided exactly what the club required. His rookie season was among the best domestic campaigns in Celtic’s history, and he quickly won over the supporters. Their trust grew even stronger the following year, as he led the Hoops to an unprecedented second consecutive domestic triple.
That friendship, however, was severely strained when Rodgers made a surprise move to Leicester City midway through the 2018-19 season. Many supporters felt betrayed, even after he returned to Celtic four years later.
However, his recent domestic success, along with the perception that his initial departure was motivated by the club’s lack of ambition, has prompted some fans to soften their stance.
Mikael Lustig, a player from his first term, has expressed conflicting emotions.

The Swedish defender recalls the shock of Rodgers’ resignation, which was announced on February 26, 2019, less than two days after Celtic defeated Motherwell at Parkhead. Speaking to the Celtic Way, Lustig confessed he was unhappy at the moment, but he still admires Rodgers’ coaching.
“He is arguably the best instructor I’ve ever worked with. A true professional and a perfectionist. I like playing under him, and his tactical abilities were exceptional. My only regret is how he departed. If you claim to be a Celtic man, you don’t walk out in February. I was very irritated. It wasn’t the ideal option for the club. However, when he returned, I was quick to endorse it. He’s an excellent manager, and I hope he brings even more success.”
During that volatile week in Glasgow, Lustig was not the only one who expressed raw passion.
Six years later, Rodgers’ stunning exit continues to divide opinion. His time at Leicester was anything but unsuccessful, with an FA Cup victory, two top-five league finishes, and a European semi-final appearance. However, for many Celtic fans, this does not excuse the manner in which he left.
Tensions over transfers, as well as more recent issues like the “cowardly action” incident, have only fuelled the flames. And, while his second stint has already resulted in new cutlery, others believe the confidence that was damaged in 2019 will never be totally repaired.
