Update Emerges After VAR Accused of ’Serious Error’ For PSG Winning Goal vs Barcelona

An update has surfaced after VAR was accused of making a “serious error” in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Barcelona on Wednesday night. Ferran Torres gave the Spanish champions the lead in the 19th minute, but the holders maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

Senny Mayulu, the most recent graduate from PSG’s talent factory, scored the equaliser barely 20 minutes later. With neither team able to impose true dominance, a draw looked the most logical outcome. However, Goncalo Ramos’ late strike in the 90th minute has sparked controversy, with VAR accused of selecting the incorrect frame when revisiting an offside call. See the following:

The replay displayed to broadcasters focused on the moment after Achraf Hakimi released the ball, making Ramos appear onside rather than at the point of contact for the assist. The fallout has been enormous, with the early-season match already being viewed as a litmus test between two favourites for Europe’s top prize. Now, new information has emerged regarding the legitimacy of that critical decision.

Update Emerges Following PSG’s Controversial Winning Goal

Despite claims that those behind the criticised technology manipulated the TV feed to support their decision, new analysis has revealed that the Portuguese striker was onside regardless of the frame.

Archivo VAR, an X account dedicated to reviewing such decisions, initially labelled the call as a “serious error” in the immediate aftermath. However, after conducting their own in-depth review, their update has shed light on whether their initial assessment was accurate. They wrote (read the entire post below):

“Analysis of PSG’s second goal using the appropriate frame. Despite the fact that the ball has moved further back, Goncalo Ramos remains in an enabled position. THIS IS A LEGAL GOAL. Despite a serious error by the semi-automated offside technology system in selecting the frame, the goal remains valid.”

PSG has resumed their season exactly where they left off, after winning four trophies, including their long-awaited first Champions League title.

Following a resounding 4-0 win over rising Italian club Atalanta in the first week of the league phase, an away success over last season’s semi-finalists reinforces their determination to maintain their European title, as they sit comfortably inside the top three of the current power rankings.
